No need to worry about Air Force. Easy game for BYU. Its the next one that will kill them. Utah will win that handily.
RR | 5:31 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Pitta and Collie will really have to step up if Unga is out. If Pitta can repeat his performance, that should give strength to the team that they can win, and hopefully boost the whole team.

I still say let Unga sit if he is still sore so he can be used the following week when BYU really needs him.

Keep it up Pitta!!!

Sammy, my boy, do you see that big bullseye on the front and back of every Utah Jersey? BYU will hit that target so many times that the yewts will not even know what hit them. Besides, I doubt that the team will even be able to get in the stadium because of there big heads. This game has written all over it a big fall for the haughty yewts.
GO COURGARS!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sammy, go suck your thumb!!!!!!!!!

The coach's comments about the cut block are dead-on. This is a safety issue that the NCAA has failed to address.

High School Federation rules prohibit the cut block. College rules prohibit the cut block in some situations (open field, moving toward the original spot where the play started), but the exceptions allow the cut block under so many circumstances that the partial prohibition is unenforceable.
HIgh School Cut Block | 8:25 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
High DOES allow but blocks inside the tackle and at the first level (meaning the line of scrimmage). It would be very difficult to take away that block and having played Offensive and Defensive line, I don't think it should be taken away.
Re: DAO | 8:31 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
I couldn't agree more. Pitta's size makes him a target for the cut block because defenders have a hard time bringing him down with a traditional tackle. That's actually one thing I noticed at the SDSU game last week...the Aztec defenders almost always delivered the cut block to bring him down. I kept waiting to see if he'd hurdle them, but he never did.

In short, I agree that the cut block is a safety issue. If the NCAA is going to penalize the horse-collar tackle, they should penalize the cut block too.

Cougs want high school rules... typical BYU whining.... GO UTES!!!!!!!
Huh? | 8:45 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Boring. Pitta will be crushed by Air Force.
Ute fans don't get it | 10:16 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
If I read schedules and results right, BYU has beat Utah the past two years in a row.

I think the arrogant Utes need a scoreboard that shows they have more points before they can claim any type of supremacy.

The Utes have big heads because of how "other" teams have played, but forget to look in the mirror and remember how they needed luck, and the mistakes of a freshman kicked to beat TCU.

Typical Ute fans, resting on the laurels of other teams. Hiding under their beds and in their closets, afraid to take on the Mighty Cougars.

Sure they know how to twist the names, like a third grader, cubers, kittycats, kitty-litter, kittens, BYWho, etc. but they just don't know how to beat BYU.

Bragging rights come when you win, not when BYU wins.

Put a lid on it, do it on the field, and until that day, stay jolly, and call us "Sir", Utah cannot claim anything except losing to the Mighty Cougars.

Looking forward to the quiet RES again at the end of the game, but us BYU fans will try to cheer loud enough to dent the thunderous silence again.

It's the SCOREBOARD, silly-Utes.....
Re: Scott | 10:23 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Typical Utah Utes' obsession with an opponent that they just can't satisfy their craving for in spite of their repeated, persistent, demeaning, character-lacking efforts. Apparently it isn't enough for Utah to have a great year since this type of childish behavior continues on and on. Speaks volumes about the immature nature of the individual accusing others of whining.
Scott | 10:24 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Tackling is a safety issue too.... Sounds like Cougs want Powder Puff rules.... Wait until Utah ABSOLUTELY CRUSHES and MANHANDLES BYU.... then the Cougs will REALLY whine.... GO UTES!!!!
RE: Huh? | 10:24 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Air Force may crush Pitta, but as CSU found out, you try to stop Pitta and Collie then becomes unstoppable. Air Force will have a difficult time stopping both! GO COUGARS!
haunyocker | 10:30 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
re: high school.

You mean "but" blocks are only allowed inside the tackles...darn...I was hoping to see a lot more of them in the open field.
Pitta is a stud | 10:37 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
and what's even more exciting for BYU fans,

is that Pitta, Hall, Collie, and George are all Juniors and Unga is only a Sophomore.

And, McKay Jacobson, BYU's offensive rookie of the year in 2006 with 28 catches for 547 yards and 3 TDs, will be back to replace Michael Reed as the wide receiver on the side opposite Collie.
re:Scott | 10:42 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Whining about BYU.

Typical Ute fan.
re:Scott | 11:00 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Kyle has "whined" about the AFA cut blocks before.

NFL teams have "whined" about cut blocks for years. The NFL has fined players for cut blocks.

What have you done to come off as such a "tough guy"?

Typical Ute fan, whining about BYU.
utes | 11:09 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Yeah we had a great team in 04 all you kittens keep saying we have big heads but we have big players that fill those heads. SD is next then we start on the work of taking you out. You will not get a victory this weekend everyone will say you were looking ahead to the UTES...keep looking.....

Re:Ute fans don't get it | 11:26 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Really? You are going to say scoreboard to Ute fans. Why don't YOU check the scoreboard genius. The score is 53-33 for the Utes. I really don't want to get into that discussion because you have won the last two years, so you have bragging rights right now, but please don't say scoreboard when it is so irrelevant.
Regarding Pitta, I think he is hands down the best player on the Cougar team. The guy is incredible. Props to him for having such an outstanding season and career. He is one of the guys on the team that you have to respect. That is what I think BYU does incredibly well is distribute the ball to their great TE's which opens up the deep ball and gets the defense to respect them and open the running game (if you have it, which you have the last few years.)
Props to Pitta, but "Ute fans don't get it" is one of the most hippocritical posts I have ever seen. You are right in some respects though. It is the SCOREBOARD. 55-33, or more importantly 10 wins to 9 this season.
Rules | 11:37 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Butt Blocks, Chop Blocks, Cut Blocks are mostly illegal in high school. Certain of these are permissible in the free blocking zone simultanious with the snap, while the ball is in the free blocking zone. Outside of the zone, they are all illegal.
Stirit | 11:50 a.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Common BYU fans we are on this and other blogs as a compliment to your team. We unamously see Nov 22 as the most important game on the schedule. Even a BCS bowl game will be anticlamatic.

Go Utes!
BYUtah fan | 12:10 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
10-0 and 9-1 are terrific records no matter how you slice it.

To Ute haters: The last two Cougar wins over Utah basically came down to who had the ball last. If you have to convert 4th and 18 to win you did not dominate. Brian Johnson's last minute drives to win over OSU and TCU were masterful.

To BYU haters: Two back to back conference championships are not a fluke. One loss over three conference seasons is not a fluke. Max Hall is another in a long line of amazing Cougar QB's. The BYU offense has so much talent there are not enough footballs to go around.

Hopefully a 10-1 BYU will meet a 11-0 Utah with the Mountain West Conference (or at least a share) on the line. You can throw the records away. Anything can happen. The likely result will be what has happened the last two years. The last team to have the ball with time on the clock will win. Both teams have shown that they know how to win games. This should be the best game of the year.

I just hope the Cougs don't have their skirts on when they play the Utes.... New Prediction - Utes 35 BYU 14 (down from 17 in my earlier prediction)....

"Why don't YOU check the scoreboard genius."

Calling names. It's how we know you are a true Utah Man.

I strongly stand by my post.

Utah has lost two years in a row. The SCOREBOARD does not show records, it shows the score, where Utah was measured and found lacking. Don't tell us what you are going to do, do it, then talk.

Score board is on irrelevant if you lost last year, or the year before. You guys are so clueless when it comes to a rivalry. The loser is the loser. All of your barking does not change that.

Stop resting on the laurels of TCU. You guys were home in bed that night. Utah did not beat BYU.

I say it again. Put a lid on it, do it on the field, and until that day, stay jolly, and call us "Sir", Utah cannot claim anything except losing to the Mighty Cougars.

I'll be at the game on the 22nd. Let's see what Utah can bring. I just hope I can see around the BIG swollen-ego heads of all of the arrogant Utah fans.

Til then, stop the bark-bark-bark.
Actually | 1:11 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
49-30-4 (Utah's favor), is the official scoreboard of BYU vs Utah. We obviously don't count when the school was an academy like you do. And considering you had a 38-5-4 head start much of which was before BYU fully embraced athletic competitions beyond club type effort. And also consider they didn't have their own field and played all road games for the first few decades. So that head start etc needs to be considered in your boasting. Now you are 11-25 since 1970.

But why is this even relevant...aren't the utes always the ones saying stop living in the past followed in the same breathe (sentence) that you went to a BCS bowl (in the past)?

Get over it and please read/comment about your own team and quit being so annoyed. If you find someone annoying when you visit them in their own house and can't stand them here is a novel idea - stop going to their house. i.e. stop going to BYU articles if the comments annoy you here.

I've never once commented on a ute article-never cared to-they are not my team. Stop hating and get on the ute bandwagon before a tire blows.
geezer | 1:56 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The difference in this game could be whether or not Harvey Unga can play. Some have suggested he sit this one out. I don't think BYU wins without him. He's by far BYU's best back. I hope he'll be able to play even if he's not 100%.
Anonymous | 2:02 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Oh yes, I forget that only the years that BYU won count. I am truly clueless on the rivalry. The total record doesn't count and this years record doesn't count, only the last two years? I would give your argument some validity if you had said only the last time they played counts, but why would the last TWO count?
Only this year counts. 10-0, 9-1. We have proved it on the field, while you undeniably have fallen short in your quest.
to actually | 2:09 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
i agree that we shouldn't live in the past, but utah talking about the bcs bowl isn't the same as byu talking about 84, the majority of the current students at the u were at least born when we had our big moment, 1984? are you kidding me?
BYU vs Utah | 2:17 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The better of the two will be decided on the field, November 22nd.
CougFan4Life | 2:41 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Look, here's the deal. BYU is a terrific team, but the defense can be a bit shaky at times. They have two extremely tough games to close out the season, both of which they could lose if they aren't razor sharp.

Utah fans, you look down on BYU's 9-1 record, but let's remember that this is only the second time in school history that your Utes have been 10-0. Just chill out. The only reason the Utes beat TCU is that their kicker choked, plain and simple. Brian Johnson did what he always does, play 57 minutes of below-average football followed by 3 minutes of excellent football.

Honestly, I believe that Utah could beat BYU this year, but I don't think they will. If Utah wins it will be because the Cougars choked and didn't play their best.

I hope that the Cougs can can live up to the fan's expectations on the 22nd. I'M PULLING FOR YOU BOYS, DON'T LET ME DOWN!!!
Scott | 2:51 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
We already know Utah is better
Hey Utes- Leave it be! | 3:01 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Hey Ute fans. Back off for now and bring it to the game. I grew up a Ute and will always be a Ute. In fact, the reason I hate BYU so much is because of their fans. Don't be a Ute fan that causes indifferent Y fans to become Ute haters.
re:Anonymous | 2:02 | 3:08 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
"I would give your argument some validity if you had said only the last time they played counts"

"Score board is on irrelevant if you lost last year."

Get the gist there pal. That's what it reads, the extra year is just an exclamation point, but you don't have bragging rights yet.

Why would the record this year count in a rivalry when the two teams haven't played? You could be 11-0 and BYU 0-11, but if you can't beat BYU, you are not better.

Wyoming is better than Tennesee. They beat them.

You Utes continue to take credit for what TCU did, and not for what you did, because you haven't done it yet...

Wrap you Ute brain around this concept, and try to understand. "Put a lid on it, do it on the field, and until that day, stay jolly, and call us "Sir", Utah cannot claim anything except losing to the Mighty Cougars."

If you can do it on the field, your team, and their fans, have earned the right to claim victory.

At that point, be proud and arrogant, and boastful, but until you can beat BYU, you have not proven to be the better team.
Anonymous | 3:12 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
"BYU vs Utah | 2:17 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The better of the two will be decided on the field, November 22nd."

Just like last year.

Prove it on the field.

Not like Captain Scotty on this board, who doesn't understand football.

"I just hope the Cougs don't have their skirts on when they play the Utes.... New Prediction - Utes 35 BYU 14 (down from 17 in my earlier prediction)...."

There is some real higher-level thinking skills going on inside that noggin. I hope old Scotty is wearing his special helmet today.

...that again we find yoot fans posting their tripe and inanity on a BYU article that is about our game with Air Force and our tight end. Nothing to do with the yoots at all. But like the little brothers that they are they just can't stand it and have to once again jump up and down saying "Look at me! Hey look at me!! I'm important too!"

Absolutely hilarious!
Re: Cut blocks | 3:52 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The operative word is blocks. Not tackles. Why isn't Bronco concerned with tackles that are below the waste in the open field?

Can anyone say Willis McGhee in the Fiesta Bowl?

The short of it is that Bronco doesn't like cut blocks because they are used against his player.

I say, I don't like his BYU players holding on every play. So I would be okay if cut blocks were eliminated if the refs actually called holding.

BTW, I am not a Ute, I am a Falcon. I find it ironic that coaches don't like rules that work against their teams, but have no problems with the ones that favor their own teams. Not surprising, just funny.

Now that I think about it. You know what else I don't like? BYU lineman who are genetically larger than Air Force players. IF the NCAA could regulate that too please.
RE Sing it again sam | 4:39 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Yes, you are right... In fact byu is be the resident experts when it comes to not being able "to get in the stadium because of there big heads. This game has written all over it a big fall". Hmmm I seem to remember a similar scenario in forth worth not long ago....Tell us all about BIG FALLS please.

BYU....I WOULD BE VERY AFRAID OF THIS UTAH DEFENSE AND OFFENSE!!!! (yes I included the offense) Look at our point production vs teams with a weak defense (like yours)

UNLV 42 points
USU 58 points
AFA (decent defense) 30 points
OSU (decent defense) 31 points
WYO 40 points
CSU 49 points

Do you really see your defense (which couldn't stop at a stop sign) keeping it close enough to give your offense a chance to win? REALLY??

P.S. Need I remind you that the only time you played a team with a winning record you managed 7 points. Not to mention our defense is just as good if not better than TCU's.

Good luck! You'll need it......
ACC | 5:13 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Those who insist on calling the ballgame before it is played, are either sophomoric or soothsayers, but I suppose it is harmless fun if one does not take it or themselves too seriously.
RR | 5:15 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Like someone else said, if they double on Pitta, then Collie is open, and vica versa. If they double on both, then that leaves more WR's and TE's WIDE open. It's a lose-lose situation for an opponent. BYU's receivers are unstoppable. BYU has 2 in the top 20, #1 and #19. Oh, and BYU has won the last two games vs. Utah because of receivers.

re:re:sing sam. Your post makes no sense. You have to include all teams. You conveniently left out UNM and TCU, two of the better teams in the conference. If anything, that Ute defense and offense is weak vs. good competition, which you failed to point out.

To answer your first question, yes! How about two shutouts vs. Wyoming and UCLA. Only USC and BYU have shutout two teams this year. How many has Utah? Again, your arguments and questions are easy to pinpoint weaknesses. That's what sorry trash talk does...blinds you.
Red Man | 5:54 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
You're right, it is the scoreboard. I can see it: 42 - 7 Utah is victorious. Cougs lose just like against TCU. Go cry in your near beer.
re:Sing it again Sam/Scottie | 5:57 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
The way I see it, is Utah's wins against OSU and TCU were nothing to brag about.

BYU's win against Wasington, same story.

This is one that needs to be decided on the field.

But, until Utah actually beats BYU, and quits strutting over TCU's win, Utah has not proven to anyone they can beat BYU.

Unfortunately for the Utes, this is the first season in awhile that BYU isn't their must win bowl game, and the urgency won't be there.

I hope Utah doubles Pitta, leaving Collie to run all over Utah. I think Utah, Dougie Robinson and all the Utah "Men" have given Collie enough focus for the Big game. I think a stud like Collie would enjoy a career day against Utah, so he can answer all the armchair talking mouths.

In the meantime, until Utah beats BYU on the field, their arrogance is weak and smacks of fans who realize the outcome will be the same there Sam, and for one month they can claim all they want.

Scottie's right, we already know which team is better (see last year's score).

But Ute Logic? It's just weak smack from little brother for now.
re: BYUtah fan 12:10pm | 6:42 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
"To Ute haters: The last two Cougar wins over Utah basically came down to who had the ball last. If you have to convert 4th and 18 to win you did not dominate. Brian Johnson's last minute drives to win over OSU and TCU were masterful."

It continues to amaze me how some people claim to be fans but don't actually know what happened in the games.

To BYUtah Fan and others who have posted very similar comments, the Hall-to-Collie 4th & 18 completion was NOT the last play of the game last year and BYU did NOT have the ball last in that game.

Let's review: After completing the 4th & 18, BYU had to finish the drive which they did without any further problems (to use your wording here BYUtah Fan, it was "masterful"). Then BYU kicked off to utah and Brian Johnson was only able to move his team to about the 50 yard line. His final play was a failed Hail Mary pass and THEN the game was over.

Is everybody clear on this now? I hope so. Class dismissed.
From a Utah fan | 8:23 p.m. Nov. 12, 2008
Please don't lose Saturday, it will make the game better on 11/22 if you don't. BYU has had an incredible last two seasons and this one not bad at all. This may be Utah's year though. It was really lucky in 06 and in 07 for the Y. BCS bowl one year down the road just not this one. It would be nice if you guys were only a one loss team coming in on 11/22 but just remember, the UTES have revenge on their minds from 06 and 07. BYU coming in with a good not spectacular offense against a really good Utah Defense and a fairly decent to good and unpredictable Utah offense to a fairly weak BYU defense. I think this game is up in the air and will probably be close. However I won't be suprised but I will be a bit dissapointed if BYU loses to AF this Saturday. Good luck!!

......that UTAHs wins over TCU and OSU are nothing to brag about??? ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? REALLY??

The way I see it, any win over a team that's above .500 is something to brag about. Especially since said wins are hard to come by this year for the Cougs.

The next time you (BYU) beat TWO top 25 teams...

(soon to be three, although the third will be against the "most overrated #17 team in college football history")

Until you do that, keep it on lock down.

UTAH has proven they belong where they are because they have won EVERY game.

Until you do the same....ssssshhhhhhh

Your rants are nothing more than envy.

We can act like we've been there before BECAUSE WE HAVE!
