There goes the neighborhood. Everytime the communal thing goes, someone has to throw it out the window for capatalism.

It would be nice if they could still explore alternative business models without losing the original intent. Have more structure and accountability, fine. But if you take the element of choosing your portions and paying what you feel its worth, then you've lost what One World was all about. You've changed the mission; lost the mission. Its sad. Now its just another restaurant with funky decor.

What about paying a living wage? What about providing health insurance? What about retirement?

Oh yeah...you have to make a profit to do all that.

Let's hope so - and that this country does the same thing with this gov't sooner than later.

Hm.. Share with everyone, let people take what they need and pay what they can afford, supported by volunteers, sounds like the Red Cross, the Boy Scouts, the United Way, the Linux movement, and many other "unamerican" ideas.

Did you capitalists all forget the "thousand points of light" speech? Nobody is forcing anything on anyone here, and I say GOOD FOR THEM. Capitalism only requires voluntary agreement by buyer and seller, but it isn't always the seller that unilaterally that sets the price (e.g. eBay, Priceline, real estate, the bazaar).

If you think volunteerism is antithetical to capitalism, you've been drinking the Microsoft koolaid. Rush Limbaugh I expected, but Glenn Beck should know better.

There is no reason this should be a story. This is not a business but a charity. They should organize as such.

Don't bring Rush into it. He just making the point that this is not a business model that is sustainable.

I don't think anyone is questioning the intent here. A very noble intent indeed. The fact is when you are not bringing in any money... (ie., letting customers pay what they think is fair) you starting running into expense problems, running up debt and having to layoff "workers". If we have learned anything in the last month or two, when costs start outweighing revenue, then we have problems. Where does the money come from then? Hopefully not the taxpayer.

"the payroll had reached what Cerreta called an 'outrageous' $20,000 a month"

Maybe she was employing the same "We'll pay you what you think is fair" business model for her employees too!!
