Best coach in the state...best program in the state. Nice job Barnes, now fire Brent Guy!

Stew is awesome and we're lucky to have him. At least we're good at Basketball. Now if we could just find a Stew Morril type person as our HC in Football...
SLCAggie | 10:22 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Way to go Utah State! Stew totally deserves the contact. He has build USU into a basketball powerhouse. It is true, you can win in Logan. So let's get a good FB coach and we'll be set!

Awesome. With Morrill leading the program, Utah State will continue to have the best program in the state of Utah.
Dave | 10:56 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
congrats Coach Morrill, you've established a great program that all of us Aggies are proud to rub in the face of the lesser programs at Utah and BYU.

That is awesome Stew will be staying. I wish we could just get some tougher pre season games to get a better seed in the NCAA's and finally start showing the nation what USU can do! Go AGGIES!
Winningest? | 11:05 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I don't think "winningest" is even a word. I think the phrase should be "most successful".
Anyway, this is very good news. The only thing better would be a new football coach. Let's go Barnes and let's get a football team too.
Go Aggies!

You gotta love what Stew has been able to accomplish in Logan. I can't believe more 'major' universities haven't tried to steal him away. That kind of winning % is an incredible feat, no matter what conference you're playing in. Way to go Stew and also way to go USU for realizing how valuable of a commodity he is. I can't wait to see how the aggies do this year without Carol. He was a great player but I'm anxious to move past him and get back to more of a team concept. Go Ags!

yes!! getting a new football coach every 3 yrs is waht we need to do to win in footblal!!!!
since 1948 the average life expectancy for a usu football coach is 3.9 yrs, this is brent guy's 4th yr, right on track! also, sicne 1992, the average usu coach lasts 3.2 years.
Hiring a new coach every 3.2 yrs is awesome!!
Pro's of Guy leaving...none. Con's of Guy leaving...starting all over from scratch again! Then fire the next guy in 4 years!

Now that Stew has his contract extension, anybody agree that USU should upgrade their schedule? I would really like to see the Ags have a better shot at an at large bid if they don't win the WAC tournament.
Basketball Elevated | 11:29 a.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Stew is a tremendous basketball coach and recruiter. I just hope that maintaining the status quo is not good enough. He has elevated the program over his time at USU for sure, but things have slowed over the past few seasons in my opinion. I would love to see USU start playing a little more challenging schedule. I am currently a grad student at Gonzaga (Stew's alma matre), and I don't see any reason why USU can't follow in their footsteps. It won't be easy and will take several years, but it can be done. Congratualtions to Stew and go Aggies!!!

Good for USU, what a coach Stew is. He is Mr. Consistency if there ever was one. Does he know anything at all about Football? Or maybe a better question is does he know more the USU’s Football coach. The Aggies have had a great Basketball and Football tradition. It’s hard to watch the Football program keep going downhill, when it really doesn’t have too. Let’s hope they can someday get a football Coach the is equal to the Basketball coach.

You all are delusional. There are 1000 coaches in this country who would have the same record, if they played the same competition in the friendly confines of the spectrum. When is Stew going to start scheduling some credible opponents? If you question my comments, go have a look at the upcoming preseason.
Home record | 12:17 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
This article should have included Stew's record at home in the Spectrum. I'm not sure off the top of my head, but it is some ridiculous number like only 10 losses in his ten years at USU. Also, what is USU's record vs. BYU and vs. Utah under Stew's tenure. I am pretty confident it is over .500, and I can think of only 1 loss in Logan to either of those two teams under Stew. Simply amazing what he has done with all of the disadvantages of USU and none of the advantages Utah and BYU enjoy.
didnt know | 12:26 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I didnt know you are considered one of the most successful coaches in america when you only win 1 ncaa tournament game in your existence. The 5 ncaa bids to 1 win, that ranges in 12-14 seeding definatly consistutes a 7 year extension.
USU #1!!!

Congrats to Disco Stew......he's done a wonderful job with USU's program and deserves the extension he got.

Yeah lets get a tougher schedule. Sure we always win 20 games a year, but a good percentage of those are against nobodies. Why don't we do what Weber State does and schedule teams like UCLA and Illinois?
Go Aggies! Way to go Stew!

Utah Man | 1:08 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Congratulations Aggie fans. Stew is one of the best coaches in the west, if not the country. He is a once in a lifetime coach. You have the best homecourt ambiance in the state, but before you start calling yourself the best program in the state, you need to beat Utah and byu on their home floors as well as win an NCAA Tournament game. That distinction will forever be Utah's.
Dr. J | 1:11 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Yes, let's continue to schedule Pararie View A&M, the little sisters of St. Bendictine and a few NAIA schools and every year. Then imagine what our record would be!
CaptMorgan in MS | 1:20 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I think it is great that nearly all of the comments are congratulatory because Stew is great and deserves this, and that they also make a little jab at the football hiring process. Look at Stew's record before coming to USU, he was winning before he got here, including in an upgraded conference (the WAC of old). That is the key for the football program. I think it would be great if we went after John L. Smith again... I think he is available and that is the last time USU even had a sniff of success. He can be a crazy guy (I've been around him for locker room speeches)but he is a good coach and he has already proved that he can win at USU and at higher levels (conference USA). Bring back John L!

1000 coaches? Seems like I heard there were somewhere over 300 Division I teams, so if we assume the same number of Division II and III teams, you are essentially saying that EVERY college coach in America could do what Stew is doing.
My question to you then becomes this. Why aren't they? Sure there are arguments about his schedule, but you can't argue that he's been in Logan for 10 years and has just added 5 years to his contract. Wouldn't at least some of the coaches in America besides him want something like that?
Stew is a winner, plain and simple.

Perfect timing for Stew. He is a great coach but one thing is for sure: He will never have the same run he had when my boy Jaycee was running his team. I"m sure he'll have some winning seasons still, but nothing like the past 4 years.
AggieGal | 2:23 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Yay! I'm so glad Stew will be sticking around. He's a fantastic coach!!!

@ Wildcat
People said the same thing when he went to the WAC...
"Sure anybody can win 20+ games a season in the Big West but it's a hole different ballgame in the WAC"
Stu's WAC Record
2005 - 2nd, 23 wins
2006 - 4th, 23 wins
2007 - 1st (tie), 24 wins
I agree that the preseason schedule needs a little more heft. They should probably see if they can't get themselves in one of the big invitationals.
They also need to see if they can't recruit a little more size. They are starting to look alot like the Airforce Academy

Don't be so darn greedy. ONE good sports team is quite enough for any institution!
Huh? | 3:37 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
One of the most successful programs in the nation? That is going way overboard. Aggie goggles on with that comment. No one out of Utah or the WAC could name one Aggie. Yeah, they win games, but look at their schedule every single year! Even SUU could win with USU's OOC schedule. USU plays no one of note except in state rivals.
USU is demolished when it meets a real successful program on the road or on neutral court. Look it up and you'll see what I mean.
Gotta do something to keep D1 status I guess.

I hear what yall be saying about the Ag's, they are well known for the OOC scheduling. Playing Cupcakes is a good way to make sure you get the 20 wins regardless of how conf play goes.
I noticed last year the WAC champs got schooled in a few of their only decent OOC games: Weber and Utah.
But don't blame Stew for BYU not coming to Logan and playing them. That was all on BYU...pretty pathetic, why were they not embarrassed or ashamed?

Well if you don't think USU is just a poor D1 team and only schedules cup-cakes to keep our D1 status then you must not think very much of your own program because the record shows that we have for the past decade handled every team in the state pretty well, including a couple blow outs of the beloved Cougs, and Utes.
Re: HUH??? | 6:25 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
I guess scheduling cupcakes is one way to get into the BCS in football right?

Put someone in the NBA, win an actual NCAA game, beat 1 decent team outside of the state not of the WAC. The main items that makes a coach or programs legends, are NOT IN STEW'S PORTFOLIO.
You wonder why no big programs have gone after him? Theres your awnser.

STEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!
Powerhouse? | 9:28 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
This just shows how bad the WAC is if Nevada and Utah State are the cream of the the WAC. Stew is a good coach but Utah State is still the 3rd best program in the state. Even if Utah and BYU only fill half their arenas, they still bring in three times more revenue and will always gain more national respect. If Utah State wins 22, Utah and BYU win 20, the selection committee will always choose the Utes and Cougars over the Aggies. It's simply a fact of life. Stew utilizes talent extremely well.
Rated | 9:45 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
Overrated--Try recruiting NBA players to Logan. And remember Ohio State? I'll take Stew any day. The Ags may not have won a national champeenship lately, but they surely have been more than competitive with in-state teams.
Stew, I believe, had a shot at the Utah job...declined.

Re: Powerhouse? | 10:21 p.m. Oct. 15, 2008
If you'd like to call the WAC weak, perhaps you should look at Morrill's record at USU vs. both Utah and BYU (not to mention actual head-to-head matchups between WAC and MWC schools--pretty equal honestly). At USU vs. Utah, Morrill is 5-4 (keep in mind the games alternate every year and Morrill has NEVER lost a home game to the Utes, so look for that number to jump to 6-4 this year). At USU vs. BYU, Morrill is 5-4 (winning 4 of the last 5, in fact the Cougs have had such a tough time winning in Logan lately that they flat refuse to play the Aggies unless every 3rd game is scheduled for SLC in the ESA). I'd say the Aggies hold their own against any other hoops program in the state.
Oh, and one more thing...if you'd like to talk about the NCAA tourney and national respect, is it USU or BYU that has the more recent tourney win? I think you'll find the Aggies win over Ohio State far more current than the last time BYU won a game in the tourney (if any of us can remember that far back).

Despite all of the banter about conferences, programs, etc....Can you imagine how USU would feel if Stew left the program? Thankfully this deal provides some stability in Logan. For aggies, that's at least something to be grateful for.
Reply | 10:05 a.m. Oct. 16, 2008
Gotta love how Aggie fans put words into Huh?'s mouth. He didn't mention anything about in state rivals other than say they play them. Aggie fans freak out that big brother is putting them down. It could have been a Boise fan for all you know.
USU has had little national recognition over the past 10 years. When USU lost 2-3 games, they were put in the NIT and lost in the first round! If we want to look at other big Utah teams, BYU has scheduled the likes of Louisville, North Carolina, UCLA, USC, Michigan State, etc., and beaten some of them. Utah played for the NC 10 years ago, and has scheduled the likes of Arizona, Washington, Cal, Oregon, Gonzaga, Washington State, and LSU, and won lots of those. All I can find on USU is Drake. You did schedule Vandy and Iowa last year, so that is a start. People really care about OOC scheduling in bball, and that is where USU doesn't qualify as the best program in the state.
USU will NEVER get the national attention and respect unless it schedules better. Sorry if this boils your blood, but it's true.

Now that the WAC has the ESPN contract plus part of the bracket buster tourney. Look for more out of state talent come to Logan to get recognition. 5 years the WAC will be heads and shoulders over the MWC.
Good luck with your obscurity, if it wasn't for UNLV, nobody would even know the MWC exist. I lived in the east, and that seems to be the trend.

why are we discussing which conference is crappier? the wac as been better lately though not last year.
stew has kicked utah, byu, and weber's trash over the past 5 yrs. those are his only decent wins.
though last yr he lost to wsu and utah, byu wouldn't even come to logan and play usu. byu would rather end the 225 consecutive game streak spanning over 100 yrs so avoid a loss in logan.
they'd rather stay at home and bring in a DII.
BTW, Stew did turn down the Utah job both times from what I remember hearing from the coaches luncheons.
Bottom line yall: BYU and USU both can't win in the NCAA tourney. BYU's last win was 1993, USU's 2001, WSU's 1999, Utah well all the time.
