Moot point. Obama is going to win the election in a landslide.
Agreed | 10:34 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Mitt would have been a good VP choice, seeing that McCain now will fall victim to the economy and the ghosts of the Keating 5. Palin was the poorest possible choice, and it's becoming clearer everyday. Maybe Obama will choose Romney......hahahhahaha
Anonymous | 10:50 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Speculation is worthless. The electoral map favors Obama. Mitt should prepare himself for 2012. By then, the Republicans and Independents will be begging him to run.

Financial expertise... | 10:56 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
...could be better used in a different position. I can't recall at the moment what the Cabinet offices are, but I believe with Mitt's ability to basically make something out of nothing, he could better be used in a position where his financial expertise could be utilized. And I certainly hope Obama DOESN'T win by a landslide or anything smaller. His policies are scary!
Just a distraction... | 10:56 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
If you want to deal with reality and certainties then lets discuss if Mitt would fit into Obama's cabinet.

The prepresidential-candidate Mitt has more in common with Obama than he ever had with McCain.
Concur | 10:59 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I concur...the article is not relevant. Obama will win in an ELECTORAL landslide, with a solid popular vote margin (55% to 45%). Utah will "look out of step" with the nation as it will vote in lock step for McCain with about 68% to 32%. We'll "catch up" and realize he was a good choice about 4 years from now.
Anonymous | 11:01 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Agreed. It's a moot point.
Nuts | 11:07 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Romney would be nuts to take any kind of cabinet position. Best to sit out for four years as Obama or McCain will keep us on the path we are currently headed. Romney should run in 2012 as an outsider and keep his distance for now.
G O Please | 11:15 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Let the speculation begin? It hasn't ended since Mitt withdrew from the contest for the oval office.
Sorry | 11:28 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
But check out an electoral map. Obama is running away with it. Even Karl Rove has him winning the election.
Doug S | 11:44 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Yes; McCain's finished. But even if he were to win, he'd never pick Romney.

McCain puts up with Palin because he thinks he needs her (or thought he needed her at one point, and now that he knows better he's stuck with her). But the man is, and always has been, a one-man show. He'll never choose a cabinet member who might upstage him.
Romney is better than that | 11:57 a.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Mitt Romney is way to good for a lowly cabinet position. He was the most qualified Presidential candidate in modern history. Let Obama get beat up by the economy and when the dust settles in 4 years, Mitt Romney will be the last one standing to take the reigns.
Huck4Life | 12:04 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
After Mike Huckabee stated he would not be interested in a cabinet position Romney said he also would not be interested and repeated the exact same thing that Huck said....he didn't want to be bossed by a 28 yr old. (I think Romney said a 20 yrs old..but, you get the point). Romney is using Mike Huckabee as a reference book on what's best for his political future and that is probably the smartest move he has made towards working for the presidency. Let the games begin....

Agreed | 10:34 -

Yes, Mitt would have been an awesome Pres and/or VP! I hope McCain is squirming big time for choosing the unqualified Palin.

And Romney has stated a number of times that he IS NOT interested in a cabinet position. Good! Go fall in the hole you dug for yourself, McCain!!!

Romney 2012!
Anonymous | 12:23 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Bad decision by McCain. Romney has substance and style, and Palin just has, well, kind of a folsky "joe six pack" style. I'm a dem and was extremely perplexed but happy w/ McCain's choice on this one.
Jed Merrill | 12:26 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Romney can do better.

This would also interfere with his campaign in 2012. Romney seems to enjoy running his own PAC right now, too.

It is all speculation anyway, unless McCain wins.
Concerned | 12:29 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
We don't know who will win the election, but I hope the winner surrounds himself with economic and military experts, and then carefully considers their advice. That's more than Bush did. It seems he only listened to Cheney for which we are all paying dearly.

And you're right. Romney would have been a better VP choice than Palin who looks woefully unprepared (wink).
ron | 1:00 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
romney has already said he has no interest in having a cabinet post.
Right on Doug | 1:01 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Imagine McCain's horror when Palin said in the debates that she'd jump ship on McCain's policies and do whatever she wanted were he to kick the bucket. This is one VP choice that everyone but Palin is now scratching their on (including McCain himself, I assure you).
vote JOHN | 1:08 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
VOTE JOHN MCCAIN
like yoda said age matters not.
you guys rock.
think smart vote true for JOHN MCCAIN
Dr28 | 1:17 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
The polls have Obama ahead which is sad since the only budget he ever worked on was his family budget
and with 143 days of experience I don't understand where they think he has all this expertise
life-long Republican | 1:22 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
McCain has lost the election by: not opposing the bailout and thus losing the conservative voters he was trying to pick up, while at the same time that would have distanced him from Bush. Also by not putting Sarah Palin on the speech circuit from day one. I agree with some other writers that McCain is a one man show, and Palin was set to upstage him, America loved her from day one! Based on the candidates positions on the bailout, I will vote for a third party candidate and hope to see Romney, and/or Palin back in 2012.
C.L. | 1:33 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Obama will win, the only question remaining is: how much damage can he do in 4 years?
Anonymous | 1:49 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
What McCain cabinet?
DC Guy | 1:57 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
No way Mitt takes a job with McCain. Mitt will prepare himself to run for President against Palin in the Republican primary. Silly article, everyone in DC knows this.
B J Moose | 2:01 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
You mean w/ all the power the Treasury Secretary now has that St Mitt would not want to be the world's de facto fearless leader?
Anonymous | 2:03 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Obama already said he'd put Romney in his cabinet as Secretary of Looking Good.
complete doofus | 2:40 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
McCain is unable to talk his way out of a wet paper bag, and did nothing in the past 2 weeks to show concrete leadership in our crisis. Romney can at least explain derivatives and credit default swaps. I'm waiting for 2012.

Obama also has no clue but at least surrounds himself with people who know.

Can we administer an IQ test from now on. Then people like Bush and McCain would never make it this far.
Toast | 2:49 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
McCain is history (can you say Bob Dole). Obama will win with about 300 electoral votes. We can all thank George W. Bush for this one. While all of the problems aren't his he has failed repeatedly to place any blame on the Dems. It might just be that we need Obama for four years so that we can get another Reagan type. McCain wanted to be a Maverick and all it's done has hurt him with both sides of the aisle. Republicans don't trust him and Democrats know he's not one of them.
In four years | 2:50 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Four years will be enough to expose Obama for the hollow, smooth politician that he is. He's articulate but completely FAKE! He has never run a company, a city or state. He'll be another Jimmy Carter.
In four years, America will still be in recession and she will demand a smart economy President. Barack Obama doesn't know squat about the economy.
WA Ute Fan | 2:55 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Why do Utahns have such a fatuation with Mitt Romney? Get over him. Especially when McCain won't even be the next president. Give Mitt a rest.
It hasn't sunk in yet | 2:57 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Palin was a great choice in the view of most Utahans. McCain saw that Palin was a better for the job of VP than Mitt.

Utah just can let go of Mitt.

Let's look at the dream team: Palin and McCain. If they do the great job most Utahan believe they will in the White House. Pain will get the republican nomination in 2012.

McCain fixed Mitt's changes of ever being president. I don't think McCain would pick a person he hates to be in his administration.

Obama is a wildcard. I would like to believe Obama is smarter than to pick Mitt. Obama may feel the need to reach out to republicans.

Love "The Observer's" comment. First and most relevant and most accurate of all.
It's a sort of "duh" question--of course Romney could be in a McCain cabinet. If a McCain cabinet could ever exist. Which it won't.
Latest CNN poll came in about 3 minutes ago. Obama has widened his lead from 4 or 8 points in a matter of 3 weeks. Bush has just tied Nixon for the lowest approval rating in history, which also doesn't help.
Guess the rest of America is not gullible enough to buy McCain's "I'm doing things differently than Bush, except that I'm going to do everything exactly the same as Bush" campaign slogan.
please...... | 3:21 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
can this paper please stop trying to force Mitt down our throats....

He is not a good candidate for anything predidential related yet you keep printing articles that he is the next (_______)fill in position here.

This is the only state that Mitt could win an election in - sad for us, but true.
Too Conservative to be A Repulic | 3:29 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
McCain has lost, hold on to you britches Obama will ruin this country.
no can say | 3:35 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I hate to be a naysayer but I hope that Obama doesn't win!!!!! Where will we be in 4 years if he does? What we need in this country is a new legislature--all of them. NOt just a president. Who about getting rid of those men who put us in this condition? Wake up and smell the roses--it took more than one man to get us where we are today. It took a whole bunch of them. See you in 4 years if there is anything left to see. Don't come after me with a gun/just remember what I said. Thankyou
SLMG | 3:38 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
This is probably the best decision that Romney has ever made, not to get mixed up in the McCain/Palin circus.
The office of vice president is a dead end job unless the president dies but no one has told Sarah Palin that yet. Does anyone think that McCain would trust her to do anything significant in the administration, after all he loves being a one man show.
Not to worry our next president will be Obama, thank goodness.
In Sedonna | 3:40 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
McCains only cabinet will be in one of his houses. Remember the Republicans dumped Mitt for Sarah.
Guys (and Gals) | 3:43 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
You are underestimating and criticizing unfairly Sarah Palin. She is here to stay, and her star will continue to rise. And she is young. Our country has needed a credible voice from Alaska for a long time. Especially on energy issues. We now have one.

Think for a minute which ladies in the Democratic party might be considered as a VP choice: Hillary, Nancy Pelosi, and then who. Can you imagine Nancy being a VP nominee along Barack? Sarah has done a good job after being thrust into the limelight.

Don't blame her for Mitt's problems. He may come back again in a few years.
Mormon for Obama | 3:56 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Luckily, we do not need to worry about a McCain Cabinet. And hopefully Palin will come back to Alaska and remain here where she can do less damage.
GO OBAMA!
of course | 4:02 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
of course Mitt would be an excellent fit for a McCain administration!

. . . just one of the many reasons I can't vote John McCain this November . . .
Landslide | 4:03 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
No doubt about it. Obama in a landslide. McCain, no more than a dozen states. GOP party is dead in the water, the house, the senate, fillerbuster proof congress, thank you W for all you've done. One man can make a difference, and W certainly proofed it this time. This one man has unilaterally turned the US into a third world country, given us socialism, and ruined the bright light that used to be the United States. W did in 8 years what 70 years of communism tried to do and failed.
Mitt and Rice team 2012 | 4:08 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
I say Mitt and condolesa Rice will rock. Looking fwd to it.
Head Shaker | 4:32 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Mitt has made a lot of money, but there are thousands of Americans who have run companies and made a lot of money. The ONLY reason he is followed so closely by the DN is that he is Mormon, which is the same reason that others above tout him as somehow qualified. To the rest of the country, he is a hollow joke. Get over him.
magnus | 4:33 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
@ please...

Actualy Mitt won elections in Massachusetts and the Republican Presidential nomination in Michigan, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada. Huckabee stayed in the race for months longer than Romney and never surpased the number of votes Romney had.

All the talk and this article are pointless though. McCain will lose this election and Obama will be making the cabinet decisions. I don't like it, but frankly we are getting what we deserve. If we weren't such a nation of sheep maybe we would stand up and demand some real leadership instead of just letting the polital soundbytes and 24 hour news networks think for us and make us feel like we have done our due dilligence.

Anonymous | 4:52 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Obama will win, we'll lose and beg for Mitt to save us in 2012. Pres. Obama will make Pres. Bush look like the best president ever!
This is just what Mitt needs | 4:59 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Mitt needs to keep in the public eye for 4 years and that's going to be difficult. But it's nice you're still keeping him in the news. McCain will lose and Romney has a good chance of coming on strong. Obama/Osama will provide all the fireworks needed to keep the Dems out of the White House in 2012. In fact, it will probably get so bad that Hillary will return for round 2...just like Teddy Kennedy took on Jimmy Carter, and we got a good President in Ronald Reagan.
peterclarke | 5:06 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
Yes, he could.
Democrats made political history by nominating a non qualified African American presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama - with zero accomplishments, votes present 40 % of the time, has NO executive experience and votes 100% of the time along party lines. Bought a house from a convicted money launderer, has a racist preacher as his spiritual adviser, associates with an unrepentant 60's radical who admits to bombings of government buildings. His wife, until recently was not proud of America. This agent of change picked his VP, a man who has been in the US Senate since Nixon was President.
ohsno | 5:24 p.m. Oct. 6, 2008
You lockstep Obama fans will probably lose your jobs if he is elected. Since he plans to raise taxes on businesses, many of them will have to lay off alot of their employees and others will just go out of business rather than be over taxed. The ones who will lose their jobs will be the ones with lowest seniority (you younger people).
