Hey don't get down over last nights game and don't let it stop you from taking state!!! Keep up the good work we still love you

Brighton's #19 is Kimberly Ringwood - not Alysha Peay

Let's remember how this comment an Alta fan made a week ago went. Awww.... how sad looks like Brighton spoiled Alta's almost perfect season. It's o.k. though- there still one team out there with an unblemished record. Before you make fun of other teams Alta- be prepared to taste your own medicine.

Way to go Brighton.......VERY AWESOME

I remember seeing that comment. Alta is still going to take state though. Between Lehi and Davis I don't know who is better but one of them are going to state and I think that's as far as they'll go. The trophy is going to stay in Sandy for another year.
Too bad | 8:09 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
A great game like that was officated by the worst ref in the state.. A called handball is reversed by the center ref, intimidating the sideline judge.. Alta's coach yellow carded for asking why he would reverse the call when even a blind man could see what happened.. Alta forwards being grabbed in the box and not one call, this guy was a total joke.. Nothing against Brighton, they played a very good game, but please can the state of Utah get some decent refs..

Alta may be the giant, but giants have fallen before, remember Goliath! Lehi could make it to the final play off game and then who knows...if Brighton bumps Alta out of the running all the giants could fall. Lehi has to play smart and cool against Timpanogos and then the field is wide open. Coach put those experienced players on the field and get rid of the Freshmen!! Go Lehi!
RE:HA HA | 8:16 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Alta has already rapped up the region title..and a #1 seed in state .. They didn't even care about that game.. Here comes Alta footbal!!!.

Great win for the Bengals, but they're still out in the second (if not first) round of the playoffs.
RE: RE:HA HA | 9:01 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
This game proves one thing....the IMMORTAL is MORTAL and Brighton deserves the win! If it can be done once it can be done again and again. Don't get too wrapped up in your own game. Look Out Alta Football...Here comes another Utah County team PG!

Way to go Brighton! How interesting-when Alta loses it's the ref's fault. Brighton's defense shut down Ohai who is the reason Alta is number 1.
Soccer Fan | 10:34 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Not a pretty match by any means. Important to remember that the score was 3-1 until Alta scored in the third minute of stoppage time. Did you notice the happiest face in the crowd? BYU Coach Rockwood, who has a verbal commitment from Jess Ringwood, the best all-around player in the state. As an observer with no stake in the outcome, the officiating was horrible but far from biased. Expect more of the same until the High School Association and UYSA start taking officiating seriously by working with colleges to train younger officials and get them into a well-crafted feeder system for experience.
No need for palyoffs | 11:07 a.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Save time and money - Alta has already clearly stated they won state.
need for playoffs | 12:03 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Shows Alta is human and can lose. Who says they won't lose in the playoffs? a state championship in anything is never a given. Alta won't win it this year.
Re;No need for playoffs | 12:12 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
They have won state the last two years in a row!!!
RE:Soccer fan | 12:20 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Alta's 3-1 was due to a hand ball, the score would have been 2-2. Brighton did the same thing to Lone Peak in the state finals, obvious hand ball to win the game. Also in the last minute of play Alta not only scored their second goal they came within an eyelash of a third goal.. For such a keen observer you missed the whole game.

Three comments:
1)Lee just smirked a couple years ago when his team won with a handball. (do unto other as you would have done to you. Don't worry Lee you can run the score up on Tville to make up for it)
2)Refs need a system of being reviewed and held accountable. Currently they are "gods" with no oversight (bring back review). UHSAA are impotent to do any good when mistakes are made. They decline to the ref on the field. (Have some fortitude even if you have no brains UHSAA)
3)The refs are all assigned by the same person and there is a lot of favortism. Hence new or young refs better be related or know someone other wise plan on working the sidelines.
4)There are good refs.(which cannot be named on a public forum, but I will tell them to their face, Thanks) There are some young ones. Just not enough of both.
5)By the way UHSAA you can't fine me for complaining about refs here or about you (free and intellectual discussion can happen somewhere).
6) For the person that is complaining about good refs (up above) volunteer your time and hours to become one then.

Hey Anonymous,
Your comment about Kalia being the only reason that Alta wins is ridiculous. The assumption would be then that the only reason Brighton wins is because of Ringwood. At last count, there are 11 girls on each team that take the field. Don't you think that they have something to do with a win? DUH.
PS
Good job ref. Next time why don't you just throw the ball in yourself. Not only did that goal come from a hand ball but their defender had a hand ball on the other end that wasn't called either.

not there - when did lee mitchell's team win with a handball? it's my recollection that brighton won state on a hand ball. i may be crazy, but i'm pretty sure alta hasn't won a big game on a controversial call for years.
Not Enough Refs | 3:44 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
The UHSAA doesn't have enough referees to even staff all the games scheduled. That means that all refs will continue to work regardless of their performance. I used to be the first one to yell at a ref at any time in any place. I have learned that the yelling only diminishes the play of the team I am cheering for.
Let coaches yell at the officials and enjoy the game.
Ref's cite parent and fan abuse as reasons why they quit or won't get into officiating. I don't watch soccer, but I would have to think that Soccer Officals get the worst treatment out of officials in any sport just because the parents and fans are so close to the field that all of them can be heard by officials.
The only way officiating will get better is a bigger pool and competition to do varsity games, but the only way new officails get into it is by higher pay, whic raises participation fees or by parents and fans respecting them and not berating them, even when they are in the wrong and may deserve it.
ALTAFAN | 5:06 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
Not enough Refs is right. Schools are having a hard time providing refs for all their games. That's why Jordan had to cancel their match against Timpanogos. Most of them have stated that between the abuse from fans and how inconvienent it is schedule wise and the lousy pay. The refs don't get paid enough in soccer to take all the crap that people give them.
Soccer Player | 6:40 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
First off it was a hand ball,(next time ref open your eyes) but oh well the game is over. Both teams played amazing, and worked hard. In the end Brighton came on top, but lets not forget Alta worked Brighton at Alta. Also don't worry the hawks will be victorious again this year. A threepeat would be very nice now wouldn't it.

Every call in soccer can be controversial depending on what side of the call you are on. Any Alta fan will tell you that this win was controversial, just as any Brighton fan can enumerate a myriad of controversial calls from the previous meeting between the teams. I seem to remember in the last game a ref calling a hand ball in the box from mid field. Alta's bench boomed with joy, while Brighton's yelled for the refs immediate resignation. A cynical fan can go as far as to say that that one call shifted the momentum resulting in Brighton's loss. Of course Alta just claims they are the better team. Had Brighton lost this last match, the fans could easily cite as controversial the 10 minutes of unwarranted stoppage time, or the four free kicks--an opportunity a truly great team would have executed on--in the last minutes. The truth is Brighton out played Alta in every aspect of this game just Alta's offense out played Brighton's defense in the last match. Just remember that objective fans don't exist and all you parents berating one another here just sound like fools.

ummm i love when alta looses all the alta fans got some excuse to why they loose...YOU LOST BRIGHTON WON...CRY YOURSELFS TO SLEEP AND THEN GET OVER IT...i predict a 3-2 win for jordan over alta with a controversial handball call that didnt go alta's way :D

The ref's totally robbed us! We're still the team to beat. Poor officiating did us in!

go davis!
Anonymous | 11:29 p.m. Oct. 2, 2008
even with this losing this game, alta is still the number one team in the state. last time i checked alta didn't lose to jordan or skyline. the up front combination of ohai and roundy is deadly, and the defense is incredible. the mid field is coming into their own, just in time to peak when it counts the most. i'm looking forward to these upcoming playoffs. should be interesting.
RE:Beetdigger fan | 7:08 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
What are you talking about, Jordan hasn't beaten Alta in so many years none of us on this blog were alive.. If you can't win, don't bandwagon for some other team!. Are you guys even going to make it to state?
Oh Yeah!!! | 8:09 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Alta and Brighton...focused on one thing...bashing each other...while Davis quietly plays it's game all the way to a State Championship.
Athletes Suffer | 8:49 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Poor coaching equals an Alta loss!!
Soccer & Referees | 9:51 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The 3:30 p.m. start time for soccer games does make getting referees difficult.

The center referee for the Wed. Alta/Brighton game is one of the best referees in the state. Alex refs college games, the older UYSA State Cup games, the Premier Men's League, and represents Utah at the Western Regionals every year. Alta fans felt a crucial handball was missed in the Wed. game. Brighton fans felt a PK awarded to Alta in the first game this year was an error...that their game tape showed the infraction occurring outside the box, and that PK conversion changed the dynamics of that game.

To blame losses on the refs ignores the fact that Brighton lost its composure in the first game after the PK on the hands call, and Alta was held to 6 shots on goal the second game. In my mind, those are the real reasons for each team's loss to each other, not the referees.

Region II is a tough region; however, there are some very good teams in the other regions that should not be overlooked. It's also important to remember that any team can be defeated by another team on any given day.
Voice in the Wilderness | 10:07 a.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Well-well. A referee "costs" Alta the game and now you blame him/her. Here's feedback from a ex-HS coach that got into HS soccer officiating because of "poor" officiating. I learned that it's not as easy as it looks and have apologized to many refs for my actions. What I discovered-
1. The officials are well-trained, experienced, and try to do their best (yes, there are rare bad ones)
2. Fans/coaches are ignorant of the rules (part. handball rule), very biased, and are in some cases extremely rude (e.g., Alta, Viewmont, Bonneville) which does scare off new officials. When there is a new official, fans/coaches berate them over their inexperience so they quit before developing. Fan's/coaches' behavior/ignorance IS the problem in getting/retaining new officials.
3. Pay is... okaaay, but could be better.
4. Correct calls are according to the viewer's angle, distance, a clear view (e.g., players run across ref's view and block her from seeing a potential foul; ref does a glance away to view something else and misses a foul)
5. Center ref's don't intimidate assistant refs. We all work as a team to TRY to get the call right.
6. Outta space, but there's much more to this.
Re: voice in the WIlderness | 12:31 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Wrong on all counts.. They are not well trained..don't know the game...Many fans as well as players know the game better than most refs. Correct calls are correct calls period. Most palyers know more about the game that 2/3s of the refs out there.. I have a buddy that refs soccer games he'a an ex baketball player that can't tell an offsides from a hand ball and adnits it.. As far as the ref in the Alta game that called the hand ball and then was intimidated into changing his mind by the center ref that guy is my buddy!!.
Re: socccer and referees | 12:36 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
The ref in the Alta game is one of the worst in the state...I'm not an Alta fan or a Brighton fan. We have seen him ref in many club games etc.. He is notorius for his NON CALLS.. The guy is the worst and should stay in the premier mens league because he can't ref a girls socccer game without somone geting hurt, with no foul call.. The worst!.
RE:Voice in the Wilderness | 12:37 p.m. Oct. 3, 2008
Bottom line...you blew it!!!
anonymous | 2:34 p.m. Oct. 5, 2008
Lehi fans talking smack, Wow did you just take another loss? That's 2 losses and a tie for you now right? Davis, see you in a few weeks at the state game :)

Great comments...if they ever get printed! After twenty five great comments this entire board was cleared. Why is that? This is a hot topic let people "comment" on it. I have not read anything that offensive. What Gives???!!!!
