As a season ticket holder I used to look forward to these international friendlies, but this year, with us chasing a playoff spot, I can't be bothered to go to any of them. Who wants to see our reserves play a match that means nothing in front of an anti-RSL crowd. I agree with the excellent LA Times article that appeared this week that until MLS puts league competition ahead of marketing, the league will struggle to win over fans. International teams play essentially meaningless friendlies--although you could argue those teams really need the matches--but no self-respecting club side in Europe would play a meaningless friendly in mid-season.

I've got to admit that I'm surprised and pleased at the result, but I agree with Meaningless above. Putting a bunch of reserves out to play a meaningless friendly doesn't do much to build excitement for the team in the community.

Keep winning league games at home and start winning them on the road, that's the recipe RSL needs to follow to rebuild its faltering fan base.
re really? | 8:29 a.m. Sept. 4, 2008
Meaningless, are you sure. I know that Manchester United played in a friendly during the EPL season last year. I think it happens often, but not publicized like ours are. They also used reserves.

Reserve teams play all the time against all types of teams. The problem is they market these games as BIG games when they are not, they're just reserve matches for reserve players or players returning to match form.

And all self-respecting European sides play reserve games.
Good to see Sietz | 8:53 a.m. Sept. 4, 2008
seeing some minutes. He is our future. Also...regarding Yura, I think he is a forward who doesnt score goals. Yes he put away that floater that the goalie missed. But blowing a PK? and a one v one?

Jason has got be scratching his head over the Yura problem. Why does he seem so good as a reserve, but can't seem to find the net on the first team? He was the same at Kansas city. They would sub him in in the second half when they needed a spark. He would play like crazy, take shots like crazy, but rarely find the net.
Another player that has a hard time finding the net is Andy Williams. I feel that he is about the best player on our team, but I am very frustrated with his just over the top, or just off the side of the post shots. Andy would make my year if he hit the game winner against L.A. this weekend.
Andy won't be there | 10:30 a.m. Sept. 4, 2008
Williams is with Jamaica for World Cup qualifying and will not be playing at LA. Of course, the good news is both Donovan and Beckham will be gone for the same reason for the Galaxy.
Thanks to me | 11:12 a.m. Sept. 4, 2008
As a season ticket holder for the first 3 seasons, I kept hoping for some excitement. Last year, driving home from the St George marathon, I was listening to the end of one of the few RSL home league wins. It was the only home game I had missed in 3 years. The radio commentator said, "what ever you fans did tonight--do the same thing next time". I did not renew my tickets this year and look what has happened. Win after win at home. I love RSL but guess I will just have to keep watching on MLS Direct Kick. Guess I took one for the team.

I cant stand to watch the games on the football turf. You can hardly even see the soccer lines!! When the team starts playing in a real soccer stadium then i will start attending the games again. I love RSL and cant wait to get my season tickets at the new stadium
