I'm afraid of BYU. Please don't hurt me.
Quest for Perfection . . . | 1:27 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
First of all, I am not a BYU fan, I am not a Utah fan. Both teams bug me for different reasons, but this is a BYU article, meaning I will talk about BYU. BYU did beat Northern Iowa High School, but if they had been playing any collegiate level team, they would have lost that game. They turn the ball over 4 times in a 10 minute stretch next week against Washington, and it spares us all from seeing those "Quest for Perfection" t-shirts around every corner. I mean I go to the grocery store, and can't walk down one whole aisle without seeing 5 people in one of those things. I teach junior high, and last year I couldn't find one class I taught where I didn't see one of those "Fully Invested" shirts on a couple kids. I mean is it the dress code down their at the Y? No diversity, everyone is required to be the same and wear those shirts...anyways unless BYU makes some serious corrections on holding onto the football anytime soon, the "Quest" will be cut short.

A win against a decent team. I can see why NI is so highly ranked in the championship division.
Byu has too many weapons, and is too good.
Nice tune up game.
We will know more after next week.

I teach also, and I see Utah shirts too, and feel bad for the students wearing them, sort of like the kid in the Clippers jersey sitting next to the kid in the Lakers jersey.
A quest is not an event, it is more of a journey. BYU is on their journey, they got a good start toaday. They also have a vision of what they want to accomplish.
Today's games were apples and oranges.
Once again (sigh), we'll wait until the end of the season and see which team is the better team.
It does not matter, though, Utah will find the way to look at the scoreboard showing 00:00, BYU having more points, and will find a Kevin Bacon 7 degrees of seperation logic formula that proves Utah is better, just like the last two years, and just like in basketball last season.
Unfortunately Utah fans are very poor losers, and poor sportsmen.

BYU looked horrible...they could have scored 60 points but couldnt hold on to the ball...bronco must not have much faith in the 2nd string to be leaving hall out there until the last play..good luck this season your quest should be to hold on to the ball, not perfection...

It was funny how loud the crowd would cheer at Justin Sorensons kickoffs but understandable after last years kicking game.
Go back to junior high | 3:30 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
and junior high school rant. Nobody really cares if you're not a BYU football fan, so why take the time to whine about something you never cared for in the first place.
BYU played a typical first game. Lots of good play mixed with play that needs improvement.
LSU, you remember them, the same team that's won a couple of National Championships recently, played Appalachian State, last season's Michigan nemisis and a team roughly the same caliber as Northern Iowa, and beat App St by about the same score as BYU beat UNI.
UNI was ranked in Sagarin at 84, just behind Wyoming and Colorado State, and just ahead of San Diego State. UNI was ranked higher than 6 of the 9 teams in the WAC.
Haters can go on hating, but the Quest is still alive.

All I can say is Collie was pathetic. He ran sideways or backwards most of the afternoon, and he looked slow!
Max, forget Collie. Pitta and Reed are your men, with Unga out of the backfield!
Go Cougars!

Amidst all the fuss over the pathetic turnovers, may I remind people, (especially the Y coaches) that BYU also committed far too many penalties. Some of which were the personal foul type. What's with that????? Those are things the opposing team has little to do with. The Quest for perfection needs to include personal conduct on the field as well. Nice win though, it is what it is, and we can be happy it was not a high calibre team in this case.
rere:quest | 7:17 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
I will love to see what BYU's attitude will be among the team and the fans if they come back from Washington and Oregon winless.
I remember | 7:22 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
back in 02 when BYU was supposed to go to the fiesta bowl. They threw tostitos out onto the field before their season even began and they ended up having a losing season that year. It would be smart for BYU to take this one game at a time or have a repeat of what happened in 02
Win's a win's a win | 7:26 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
Turnovers were terrible, but I would rather these guys get bumbled early on and still get a win then blow them out, get big heads and blow it in Seattle. I was never worried that they would lose that game.
Regarding the t-shirts, they say, "The Quest." I was at the Boston College game 2 years ago and the whole student section wore the same shirt. It's not a commentary on the diversity of the student body.
We're excited about something potentially great. They got humbled a bit, but still demonstrated their offensive firepower.
1 of 12 games is not statistically significant.

I posted the scores last night but 8 or 9 Top 25 teams played against Div 2 foes like Northern Iowa. This included LSU playing Appalachian State, top ranked Georgia playin Georgia Southern, 15th ranked Arizona State playing Northern Arizona, etc., etc.
There were a couple blow outs but most of these top 25 teams managed to beat the Div 2 team by roughly 20-25 points, the same spread that BYU beat Northern Iowa by.
And reading about some of those other games plently of mistakes made by the big boys.
Fact is, this was a great warmup game for BYU and we shouldn't hang our head. We may 4 bone headed turnovers by not securing the ball.
We will be fine. The question is getting ready for Washington. I watched that game last night and their defense is pourous, and their pash rush so-so. The question is can our defense put pressure on their quarterback, and worse yet, when he scrambles he is a very accurate passer, good runner. He throws on the run as well as Steve Young did. Can we play disciplined defense enough to contain that?
If we do we win. If we not...crud!

Game experience poor | 7:33 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
Aside from the game itself, I thought the whole experience was worse than years past. First, at every possible down moment, either the PA announcer or the scoreboard/video screen is shoving advertisements down our throats. There were no stats or scores or anything football-oriented to review during halftime or quarter breaks. There are ad signs 360 degrees around the field--every inch it seemed like, was covered in ads.
Now the BYU-Utah game is called the Desert First Duel? Does BYU feel like it needs to sell it's soul? How about more football and fewer ads to clutter up the game?
It would've been interesting if the PA announcer would've at least announced the Utah score to see what the reaction was. Again, more football please!

What I saw | 7:34 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
yesterday was that both Utah and BYU are wayyyyyyy overhyped. One of those teams will probably make it to a BCS game (due to cream puff scheduling) only to get it handed to them big time. I for one will be watching and laughing with the rest of the "big boy" conferences. Oh, and nice comparison to LSU. Yeah, BYU would have no problem beating down LSU... only a cougar fan....(shaking head)
Bob in line | 7:42 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
I just did a quick run down. 15 of the top 25 Div 1 played teams from Div 2. 2 of the 15 lost, of the remaining 13 they won by an average of 28.9 points.
If you take out the two loses, and there were a few blowouts by 40 or more, the average margin was 26.1 points. BYU's 24 was right in there with top ranked Georgia, Arizona State and the rest of them.
Get focused for Washington!

Does anybody know how many penalties/yards BYU had in this game? Was this a big factor? I'd like to know.
Do Your Homework... | 7:54 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
To our bigoted friend above (Quest)...
From one teacher to another, you get an F for failing to do your homework before posting your derogatory, uninformed comments. I have lived in Cedar Falls, and UNI is an outstanding team, and has been for years, finishing 12-1 last year. They are better than MANY Division I schools. You also show an incredible lack of tolerance...
That being said, BYU really does need to cut back on their turnovers. Without an outstanding offensive day, BYU would have lost to a good UNI team.

Sob,
Have you ever been to a Utah game and had beer thrown all over your wife and four kids ages 2-10? I have. There are stupid fans on both sides.
BYU will play a more disciplined game this next week at Washington. They will win. Utah can continue to look towards the BYU matchup as their bowl game. I watched most of the Michigan game. Other than the intimidation of the 100K plus crowd, Michigan was not that good. Probably not as good as northern Iowa and certainly not as intense.

No, but I have had beer poured over my head and endured language and personal insults, which would have offended the most hardened human, burped and screamed at me and my children in Rice Stadium, and I was cheering for the Utes at the time. It's what eventually turned me to BYU football after being a U alum and lifelong fan. There are idiots in every fan base, but sngling out only the Y just makes you the homer you are. Your comments had little to do with the game or its nuances, but much to do with your pathos.
Utah Man | 8:49 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
I am a Utah fan, but have great respect for BYU. Even if a team is from a smaller division, a win is still something to take pride in. That was a good game yesterday with plenty of good offence. Keep hold of the ball and brush up the defense. Good luck against Washington.
Re: What I saw | 8:56 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
You comment about LSU is unfounded, the poster you are replying to didn't say BYU would have beat LSU, but merely that Haters who point out a 24 point victory is comparable to LSU's over App St.
Mom of 5 | 9:03 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
As a fellow teacher, I am always embarrassed by posters who claim to be teachers but can't spell or use correct grammar. Please take some care in what you write and say.
The Good and Bad | 9:03 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
The bad - turnovers. Cut those out and we win by at least 38. I would have like to see our rushing game produce more. We should have averaged at least 5 yards a carry. Chambers will be very exciting but needs to brush up on his return decisions this week.
The good - Hall had all day long. This looked like 7 on 7 drills. Other than the safety our O-line was tremendous. Hall goes roughly 83% and almost 500 yards. It's tough to hit on 83% in pre-game warmups. Pitta will set a receiving record for TEs this season.
Of the 15 Div 2 games played by top 25 teams, NIU had to be one of the touger as they came in ranked very high in their division. In the end - this will be remembered as a 24 point win.
Congrats to the Utes! A BCS game on the line November 22nd would make that a game for the ages.

Nice start to season | 9:06 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
As a fan, I was pumped for the season to finally start yesterday. Max Hall looked great. I remember back to the beginning of last season, where Hall looked good but shaky in the first few games. He seemed very confident yesterday. Pitta looked outstanding and had some great catches. It probably helped that he was much bigger than any of UNI's LBs or DBs.
Unga looked great coming out of the backfield in the passing game. He didn't look as dominating running the ball as I thought he would for this game. Collie and Hall seemed out of sync. It seemed to me that they still don't have their timing back since Collie has returned from his injury. It was hard to tell how the defense has progressed. We'll know a lot more after playing against Washington's dual-threat QB next week.
Obviously, ball security and penalties were costly and need to be improved. But overall I thought it was a nice warm up game and good start to the season. Can't wait for the game next week.
There sure are a lot of intolerant idiots posting on here this morning. Go find something else to do.

As someone who was actually PRESENT at the game, I can tell you that UNI is a VERY GOOD TEAM. All of us who were there have a lot of respect for them, including the Cougars' football team.
BYU did make some errors--there's no question. But, UNI was very good.
And for the Junior High teacher who is offended at the BYU shirts in his/her school, HOW PETTY CAN YOU GET! These kids are just having fun and supporting their team like any other kids. Generally we think of teachers as being more mature than the kids they teach. Apparently in this case, WE WERE WRONG.

Of course you are not a BYU fan or a Utah fan. But reading between the lines it is obvious that you are a USU fan.. and have nothing to say about your own team! We (BYU and Utah fans) are happy to let you build your self esteem by talking smack about your big brothers. We hope you feel better because your season will be a veryyyyy longgggg one!
I'm happy | 9:22 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
We got the victory but I was just concerned with how we played. I watched the Utes, great victory for them. If our team plays the same way we played yesterday we'll not win that many games. It just seemed that we kinda checked out for the 3rd quarter and then came back. Any other team might have rallied and won against us. Great win but let's fix the mistakes and be ready for the next game that will be much harder.
Delicate | 9:28 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
BYU Fans (and Mormons, in general) are delicate flowers when it comes to anyone antagonizing them. Its like I have to pull them aside (like a small child) and tell them that everything is ok and to simply "ignore" the comments made about them. When BYU fans settle down and show a little bit of self-esteem, Ute fans and others won't have nearly as much fun with their little jabs and attacks.

To Quest: Perhaps you should pay more attention to English books and spelling than the students shirts. You wrote "I mean is it the dress code down their at the Y?"
That was just one sample from your post. It reminds me of the time I looked up at the bottom of a glulam beam. It was installed by a high school English teacher in his home addition. The beam was stamped at the factory in bold large letters. The stamp stated "TOP". I asked the teacher if he knew what it meant.
It is no wonder our kids are becoming less proficient in "there" (lol) schooling.
Just in case you have no humor, I no (lol) I misused the word "there" in the preceding paragraph.

Ute Fan | 10:03 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
I hope BYU can beat Washington. MWC needs as many wins against BCS teams as we can get. Washington doesn't look very good at all. BYU's run defense needs to get tougher. Their offense, other than the stupid turnovers, looked really good. Run over the Huskies next week.
tune up game | 10:12 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
It's nice to have a tune-up game to start the season like most of the big FBS programs also do. It makes sense to do this once your program has reached a certan level of achievement and respectability.
Freshman mistakes yesterday cost us some points. DiLuigi tried to get more yards after they had him wrapped up and he got the ball stripped. Chambers fair catching a punt on our 5 yard line which resulted in Hall getting nailed in the endzone.
And then Collie is trying to get back in shape after sitting out to let his stress fracture heal.
But there were a number of bright spots too. Chambers had some nice returns. Coleby Clawson was a monster on defense. And where has Kariya been all this time? Looks like we've got ourselves another running back! He was the star of the practice squad last season, a state MVP in 5A high school ball, had a 4.0 GPA in high school, and he's another quality walk-on on at BYU.
Hall, Pitta, Clawson, George, Justin Sorensen, Reed White, Jan Jorgensen, Unga, and Mike Reed were all great. This will be a great season.

Reality check please | 10:21 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
All we have read and heard is Mendenhall saying how deep the positions are, how prepared BYU is, how great they are going to be. Well, Saturday they didn't show much. This "barely win" would not be so hard to take if the BYU coaches were not such a bunch of blowhards.
And by the way, I watched Utah. Utah won but Michigan shut down Johnson and the offense in the fourth quarter. Utah can be had.
BYU will lose that game against Washingtonn unless they stop reading their own press releases.

RE: Bob in Line | 10:26 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
2 of the top 15 lost to D-2 schools. 4 of the top 25 lost yesterday:
1. #9 Clemson (Lost to Alabama - owner of 12 National Championships and the #1 recruiting class coming into this season).
2. #17 Virginia Tech (Lost to East Carolina from Conference USA, who plays West Virginia next week - maybe BYU could take some lessons in scheduling from them).
3. #25 Pitt (Lost to Bowling Green from the MAC conference).
4. #20 Illinois (Lost to #6 Missouri from the Big 12 - not an upset).
You could have made a point that the Big East and ACC were over-rated and that you believed that good MWC teams could play there, but you lost the chance when you said that 2 ranked teams lost to D2 schools.
The comparison to the LSU win by others is also ridiculous. Do you really think that "Quest for Perfection" would be anything other than laughable if BYU played an SEC schedule?
And to "We're no cream puff" - the creative tension between vision and reality is when you accept reality and work to close the gap. I would love to see that happen, it just hasn't yet.

Way to go, dis-ing your students. Your students shirts reflect their passion and interests and you dis it? Are you the same kind of teacher who complains about swear words and drug references and clothing that sexualizes students? Probably not or that would make you a hypocrite. You are probably only concerned when students wear BYU clothing.
If you followed best practice, you would celebrate your students interests. Clearly you are so annoyed by your students you might wish to move to another city with less provocative students, like Detroit maybe?
Maybe you could move to Rome and complain about all the crosses the Catholics wear. Or Israel and all the caps the boys wear (that would really get under your skin hey). Or how about Alaska and complain about the way everyone seems to wear parkas to school almost every day.
Come on, do you really teach Junior High? Maybe you should go back to Elementary (not to teach, to learn to spell).

Come on, do you really teach Junior High? Maybe you should go back to Elementary (not to teach, to learn to spell).

I'm neither a Utah or BYU fan, however BYU fans there is a reason why most of the teams in the top 25 play small schools. Like LSU play App. St. Georgia play Georgia Southern, ASU playing NAU and so on. They play them because they are in better conferences!! Why would a team from the SEC wanna play another top 25 team in non-conference when they play in the toughest league in the country? BYU on the other hand, plays in the MWC which has one other team this year that will probably compete with them. So BYU Fans quit trying to compare yourself to everyone else in the top 25, everybody is in a different situation than you are. Also, Washington and UCLA will not be challenges, both are lower tier PAC-10 teams. Once again you choose to not play any tough at all.

Barely win? A 42-17 shellacking is called winning. Not barely winning.
And so what? BYU runs some running backs through drills this week to hold onto the football with both hands, and next week the score will be 62-3.
Yawn. Next victim...

Cream Puff is right.
1. Beating Washington and UCLA won't prove that BYU is ready to be considered a "contender" it will only mean that BYU could play with the lower tier Pac-10 schools.
2. Losing to either Washington or UCLA would prove that BYU doesn't belong in any discussion involving the better schools from the top two conferences.
I send a lot of tuition money to BYU and love the education that my daughter is currently getting there. It is a great school. I really enjoy watching the games too - but some of the way that the athletic attempts to "close the perception gap" through PR and the Kevin Bacon degrees of separation attempt to prove they are the best by BYU fans come off as very arrogant.

Nice Job Bronco on the tune up game. Maybe next time I suggest scheduling Skyline or Alta.

BYU's inexperienced defense only gave up 10 points against a team that many consider better than half the MWC. Collie had 79 yards on 7 catches. Hall and Pitta were nearly perfect. Unga, as usual, impressed. Yes, there were fumbles, but after limited contact during practice, that was to be expected. LES was packed -- and people arrived early for a change. Few serious injuries. Greatly improved punting. Nice kicking. What's not to like?

I watched both, the BYU and Utah games. Both looked sloppy. Turnovers and penalties for both squads.
Good win for the Utes and for the conference. Thing is, as fans, we both better look over our shoulder and not forget TCU.
Judging from what I saw around the rest of the conference - SDSU looks not only bad, but real bad. Wyoming dodged massive bullet against Ohio at home and will be lucky to be .500. Surprised that UNM didn't give TCU more of a game, considering it was at their home. UNLV will be more of the same - only beating USU by 10.

A few points | 10:55 a.m. Aug. 31, 2008
1. Collie and Hall were not on the same page several times. PLEASE let Collie practice full-time at receiver from now on to get back into form and in sync with Hall. Put the Collie as backup QB make-believe to rest and get him back to form.
2. Losses by #17,20 and 25 should assure the Utes move into the top-25. EVERY BYU fan should celebrate that. A top 20 matchup November 22nd with a BCS berth on the line would be fantastic.
3. Some schedule comments are pretty unintelligent. Most games are scheduled several years out. Yes, Washington and UCLA curently look like bottom half PAC-10 teams but they could have just as easily been top 20 teams when the schedule was made. Washington is on our schedule clear out to 2012 I believe. No one knows what kind of team they will be then but if they are weak some will say we intentionally scheduled down. No one knew what kind of Michigan team would step onto the field when the schedule was made. Saturday's NIU game was scheduled out of necessity and yet no different than so many other teams - including the Utes against Weber State.

Great win for Utah and BYU. Perhaps if we need some more help on defense, Collie can play safety. He should get credit for jarring the ball lose on one of our fumbles.
