Does this include the good, the bad, and the ugly of the church.. or just the watered down, cleansed and untrue factors it portrays?

I care.

I agree, Shallow. This obsession with national recognition is getting a little desperate and pathetic.

... I'm also wondering why this is news. Who cares?

"IF YOU PAN IN THE SHALLOWS YOU CAN FIND GOLD"
We need to care, have more caring, for ALL good and positive things in the harsh, negative, and down-trodden world today.
"If there is anything of GOOD report....."
"and praiseworthy......"
Better an article about success and good doing,
than killings, theft, deception, etc.
God cares.
I care.
Thousands care.
Possibly million, even non-members care...even if just out of curiosity.
God bless you for your question, in our free world today, and may God, who CARES FOR YOU, fill your heart with healing, peace and renewed joy in your life.
"IF YOU PAN IN EVERY MANS HEART, YOU'LL FIND A CHILD OF GOD"
Love BACK to ALL today !

It's great to reflect, in a year when most people think that Mitt Romney has brought Mormons out of obscurity, that other (and probably better) men have captured the attention of America

Its interesting to us in Nigeria for such a recognition. The Mormon Church is becoming popular now than ever.

Mormons are such hypocrites. You are the ones that bring up your religion into everything you do. Nobody else really cares about it, but you all run around wearing your stupid religion on your sleave and shove it in everybody's face, and then when we don't like it and say anything about it, you call us "anti-" and whine about how we are persecuting you for your religion!
Keep your religion out of the public space and nobody will care! But as long as you stick your religion into our faces, we will continue to tell you what we think of it. That doesn't make us bigots or unfair or anything; it makes you stupid to continue the practice! As soon as you learn to shut up, then we will shut up about your religion.

How about the ensign, that will work for me. Although I haven't counted how many times I've seen their pictures on street magazines. Hummmmm?
As a Mormon... | 10:10 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
... I still don't understand why I should care about this. Shouldn't we applaud the efforts of anybody who acheives or accomplishes something great, regardless of their beliefs? If those people also happen to be LDS, does that somehow validate my beliefs? If so, then when members of my faith receive attention for committing crimes or behaving poorly, should that somehow detract from my own faith?
Not only is obsession with national attention "desperate and pathetic" as Bob2 says, it can be a dangerous path if we deem such attention to be of any importance.

This is awsome, people are great because they are LDS. Look at how highly disproportional all our greatness is compared with the anti and non-members. We deserve to be praised and repected in this matter. For you haters who have commented negatively, there are billion who care, that is who. Get over it all you non-members and wannabees, if you ever achieve something of note then perhaps you will be recognized until then please stop being so bitter to greatnes of others. Jealious???

Anonymous- Would you tell Jesus to "shut up" and not be public about His religion? Where would we be then. If you dislike the Mormons & our religion so badly why do you waste your time reading about us and being so hateful. As a member not in Utah, I enjoy news about members accomplishments. You rarely hear about it out of the state of Utah.
Our church does So Much for all folks around the world, and our leaders don't ask for headlines.
We try to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with all. Some embrace it and some don't, and that is ok.

To CA Cares,
I always hear the comment of "...we do so much for folks around the world, and our leaders don't ask for headlines."
I would agree that the church does some good but not nearly as much as it is percieved by members. The percentage of charitable giving to the percentage of income is just horrible. It is a shameful drop in the bucket. If you look at charitable organizations and business charitable giving, the LDS church is not even close to being listed while there income rivals many corporations.
And as far as not asking for headlines well if you take the time a read stories about the LDS helping out, the story and victims are often overlooked and the focus is on all the greatness the LDS church is providing--is this what you call staying out of the limelight.

Everyone needs to simply turn towards there friends and neighbors and care about there thoughts and respect each others points of view. All is good when you see the goodness in others and share a smile and a warm heart.

Its probably possible to find treasure in the most unlikely of places, however one usually pans for gold in a gold mine.
Anonymous | 11:46 a.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Anonymous | 11:16 is right on. Everyone needs to simply turn towards there friends and neighbors and care about there thoughts and respect each others points of view. But if you are a Mormon, don't do that unless you are assigned as their home teacher or visiting teacher. Then when you are released, just ignore them. That is the way God has ordained it.
All is good when you see the goodness in others and share a smile and a warm heart. But make sure you try to get the person you are smiling at to take the missionary discussion. Have a warm heart toward them as long as they are willing to listen to the missionaries. After that, just ignore them. Move on to other recruits.
Thanks, Anonymous | 11:16. Your words are inspirational.

Lloyd-
You sure seem to be misled by your thinking. The LDS church does a heck of a lot more than you think. It is not always published as to what humanitarian aide we are giving to others, and they don't ask your religion, or your income status, they ask what do you need.
They give aide to the needy, and that aide is no better or worse than any other church, organization or company. It is ok how you feel about the church's aide, they just want to help. The percentage of giving is not the issue at hand, we still enjoy hearing about LDS members in the news here in CA. Have a great weekend.

What I find ironic is that the critics of the church continue to read Mormon Times and the Deseret News. If I were so bitter towards an organization or corporation, I'd probably stay away from their publications.

Dear Anonymous and Llyod
I grew up in Ca and moved to Utah. Not because I wanted to be closer to the church but because of circumstances. I realize "Utah Mormons" do push and can be a pain in the butt. Not all Mormons are like that and you shouldn't judge by what a "handful" of Mormons do. Everyone is different and responds in the own way and most of them mean well. I agree with everyone else, if you hate Mormons so bad why read the Deseret News. If you hate your "Utah Mormon Neighbors" so much than move out of Utah. You would fit in perfectly in CA.

The LDS Church The Church saves the state of Utah millions of dollars with its Welfare Services program.
Have you ever been to a Bishop's Storehouse? It's almost like a regular grocery store. All the services are provided by volunteers. I worked at the cannery for two years as a volunteer. That added up to a lot of hours.
Have you ever been to the Humanitarian Services building where members donate many hours putting together kits...for new mothers, for schoolchildren, for those in need in countries where there are great need. (Add to that the fact that these supplies are donated by members.) The Church does so much good and yet there are those who criticize and name-call without any regard for us. I'm very tired of all you nay-sayers. When you have donated as much time and money as I have to good causes (not just Church related, then perhaps I'll listen to you.) Until then, just keep your criticisms to yourselves, please.

Lloyd, I challenge you to find a church in the USA who does more than the LDS Church based on its number of members. I'll wait for your reply. Please provide statistics from both organizations.

I have no problem with people disagreeing with my faith or beliefs.
I do have a problem with people making false statements, accusations and stereotypes about my faith.
Members of any faith or organization have the responsibility to speak up and ensure they are not misrepresented or slandered.

There is no bad. There is no ugly. Not in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The people are not perfect, just as you are not. But the Church is perfect.
Perhaps you have that mixed up with another Church, perhaps yours?
Come and join us; get happy, like we LDS are!

Obviously, you care. You read it. Or at least the title. And you're here at DESERET NEWS, an LDS newspaper. So it looks like you care more than you want to admit.
To Anonymous at 9:51 | 5:12 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Our religion is brought up in everything we do because it is OUR WAY OF LIFE. We don't separate it into just one day, like so many other folks do. My, what an angry person you are! You may want to consider getting some mental help for that. Come join the Church, then you'll be happy and no longer have such low self esteem that causes you to lash out at people you don't even know. God Bless you in your healing.
To Lloyd | 5:18 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Can you back up your second paragraph with legitimate documentation? I would suggest if you can't do that, best to be silent. You know not of what you speak!
Bet you wouldn't be so quick to falsefully and hatefully judge if your little hiney needed some help.
Get out there and do something for someone else!

You ask who cares about the LDS church? Obviously you do given the huge amount of whinning you do on these blogs! If you really don't care, why do you come here and complain? And by the way, the "ugly" stuff you mentioned is in your imagination or your hopes!
Hydie OH! | 8:15 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
Ahhh! all you's are fuddie duddies and whine too much!
What's even funnier is when LDS battle with LDS. Member against member, on all these posts--hee hee hee! And even funnier when y'all call each other anti's because, each of you has a different point of view. Are we a peculiar people or just a bunch of funny grumblers?

I find it interesting when I learn that someone famous is LDS because it means I have something in common with them.
I'm not sure why every week there are a bunch of posts in here from Mormon-haters, why even waste your time? I don't think I've ever checked out Catholic Times or Evangelist Times - it's not really any of my business and my opinion would come from ignorance and probably not mean much to the regular readers.

I don't see one single evidence of member battling against member on this blog...you are seeing things that don't exist. Been for an eye exam lately? Or a psych evaluation? How about an English grammar class? Might want to take all of these for a good spin around the block and then come back on and try again to make some sense next time. Thanks. Have a blessed life.
Whitewashing | 8:52 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
You know, I get a little sick of always reading about the "white washing" of church history. Exactly what are we talking about? The Mountain Meadows Massacre? No white washing there - seems like everyone knows about it.
If you mean some obscure account in the diary of an anti-Mormon from 150 years ago, WHO CARES? They were liars in life, why should it be any different in death? Just because one person with a grudge wrote a one-sided account a zillion years ago doesn't make it true, folks.
No need to white wash it when it's fiction.

Many of us are still waiting for Lloyd to tell us where he got those "income/donations" figures. Please lloyd tell us where you got them. Okay, I will help you out. YOU MADE THEM UP!!! (like so much of the nonsense I read against the LDS church, e.g. Walter Martin). Those figures simply do not exist. Nice try, but you got caught.
I think the Mormon church | 10:47 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
donates very generously. Kudos for that!
I don't think others should critisize either, but I do agree that the LDS church thinks it has better "truth" than others. That needs to change because it will not help your image. What helps is giving without expecting anything in return. I have met members of the LDS church who do this (as well as other churches). We need more people in the LDS church to do this in the world...acceptance of people for who they are unconditionally. I'm sure that once people feel this acceptance they will contact you if interested. And if they're not interested you should love and accept them just the same.

For those that think this is a waste of time are forgetting this is MORMONTIMES.COM. It isn't much different than Parade Magazine or News Times (Arizona) found in papers.
For those that think this is watered down or untrue statements, remember this. You write to balance things out per your perspective. Do we not have the right to do that too? I remember in the late 70's seeing the anti-mormon meetins and pamplets. We are just catching up.
For the untrue statements I have this to say. Did you see the "History Detective's" story on the book about Polygamy? The first few pages talked about how Joseph was killed by being shot off of a horse. Quite false. I have seen articles quoted by you that are just as wrong on basic history as this. You claim that you have the "truth" and use some kind of logic to try and convince others using these articles. Most of my comments are just corrections of things I see are incorrectly worded. I also put in a different perspective to give balance. Again, is that not just what you are doing? Do I not have that right?

Why is this issue something anyone should be concerned about? If a person is interesting or newsworthy, feature them, their paticular religion, what does that have to do with anything?
What a shallow question, who cares?
