Back in the day, when I would listen to a so called Hell, Fire, and Brimstone Preacher. I mostly did it for the entertainment value, rather the fear value or the Salvation Value. Although "they can really preach" or "will put the fear of God in you" Although their preaching is sometimes based in Truth. They are for the most part limited by their own self inflected torture. Some lack education and some lack Scripture Knowledge. Some are just Hateful, Miserable People. It is fear of Satin they Preach from. Not love of Christ. It is their desire to impose Social and Moral Filters through the Fear Of Hell and to keep people in line, and putting Chump Change in the Collection Plate, thus paying their Salary and those of their cronies that they control. For them it is their stick, reputation, and living. These are the Fetus Picture Waving, and the She has to pay her sign debt by keeping the baby crowd. I may be a flaming Anti-Abortionist, and proud of it. However these people have always wanted to make me flee. The first time I came to LDS Church. I noticed No Hate, and No Collection Plate

Can someone please explain to me why this garbage is presented as a NEWS article?

Jean Paul Sarte was only partially right. To be complete, we must declare "Hell is other people... in Utah who think they have a calling from God to police the morality of everyone around them, and to shove their own beliefs down everyone else's throats, and to judge others against the standards they fake when attending Church each week, but which they violate regularly during the week, and who think they are morally superior to everyone on the face of the planet."
That is hell. Mr. Huntsman is the Governor of Hell.

Only In Utah: WHY, oh WHY, did you read it if you don't want it included in "The News"?
Reading an article that is clearly headlined is within your own Free Agency!

I didn't read it. I saw the headline and wrote the comment. I don't believe in Hell any more than I believe in Valhalla. Only in a place like Utah would such an article be found on the front page of a newspaper.

There is no heaven or hell, only life here and now so do your best and contribute to the good of man and the universe and leave others with happy memories..
If there is no Hell or Heaven... | 6:43 p.m. Aug. 30, 2008
If there is no heaven or hell then why do anything good or bad? Why not just do what ever you want? If I did not believe in both in some form I would not be inclined to obey any law, and structure or authority. I would see n reason than do only what brings me pleasure. In fact There would be no reason for laws or for any of us to obey any of them. It would be survival of the most powerful only for there would be no reason for anyone to make any effort on another's behalf. There would be no good nature toward others or inclination to help, improve, or show kindness to our fellow man. It is not in our nature alone to do well without reason, fear, reward, or justification. We sometimes may fear God and also be obey him in hopes of reward, recognition, acceptance, and fear of punishment.

It's nice to know that a fear of hell is the only thing that keeps you from being a completely self-centered anarchist. In fact, I find it interesting that I hear the same statement or slight variations of it made by many members of the predominant local faith. (No, I'm not a hater, I happen to be a fellow member.) It's sad that so many people need the fear of hell or a reward in heaven to be motivated to do good. Such a view indicates a very immature if not phony spirituality.

With out Heaven or Hell, there are no social filters, and morals do not exist. To the Believer there has to be a Heaven and a Hell, so that those that do not obey God "get theirs." For those that obey there has to be punishment for those that do not. Less punishment for those that did not know. Of course their has to be punishment or there is no point in subjecting your self to the moral controls. Also if you do subject yourself you get a huge reward, "Heaven" which means different things to different people. The degrees of Heaven are clearly spelled out in the New Testament. There appears to be only one degree of Hell which is Hot. Something Like Death Valley on Steroids. Of course their is always the ability to Repent. Thus coming under the Social Filters and Moral Controls. We accordingly Go To Hell if we do not repent or repent and do it again. Some of this seems to be the judgment of man on his fellow man, some of it the judgment of God. We as human beings have the Free Agency to determine where we end up.

to awesomeron,
Without heaven and hell the only thing that DOES exist are social filters and clear morals where people treat one another as rational equals. Heaven and hell, being myths, serve to twist people's thinking so they feel they are superior to others (God's Chosen People). That is a distortion of morality. You prove that by your own twisted morality: "their has to be punishment or there is no point in subjecting your self to the moral controls." That is the infantile morality of a 4 year old child. Rational adults have matured in their sense of morality. They do what is right because it is right, not because they are afraid of getting a spanking from a parental figure. Your religious beliefs about heaven and hell have paralyzed you in a child's view of morality.

Woah, Dude! You've got serious issues. Do you work for the Post Office?
You owe it to yourself to go somewhere else before you blow an artery. I just got back from a year in the Middle East. Try a year there. Then you'll appreciate Utah.

I appreciate Utah precisely because it is NOT dominated by theocratic fundamentalists think they have a calling from God to police the morality of everyone around them, and to shove their own beliefs down everyone else's throats, and to judge others against the standards they fake when attending Church each week, but which they violate regularly during the week, and who think they are morally superior to everyone on the face of the planet.
Utah is superior to the Middle East DESPITE Mormonism, not because of it! Utah is superior to the Middle East because of the principles of liberty and freedom guaranteed in our Constitution, not because of Mormon self-righteousness. To the degree Utah is like hell, it is because of Mormon arrogance, self-righteousness, and efforts to judge and police the morality of everyone around them.
Amen and Amen.

I love these rants, spewing venom and judging others in the harshest possible terms -- for being judgmental.
They make good object lessons for my kids.

So it is OK to judge others who are judging others for being judgmental, but it is not OK to judge others for judging others, but it IS OK to judge others.
Is that what you are saying? Sounds like more LDS spin to always make what they do OK.
Hypocrites.

I would rather go to hell then be in heaven with people I didn't like. To me, the true and only distinction between heaven and hell is being with people who you love or enjoy, respectively.
