better refs needed | 10:54 a.m. Aug. 21, 2008
maybe some of this endowmment money will be used to pay for better refs; better training for refs in particular... maybe some reviews of their performance to determine the good from the bad. Make the refs accountable for their poor performances.

As an official, I couldn't agree more. The problems stem from putting together a competent 5 man crew. 2 or 3 are good and it's hard to make up for the rest of the crew. 1 poor ref makes the whole crew look bad. Some guys need to retire, pay needs to be increased to entice younger guys to step in. We need better evaluation so that the ‘good ole’ boy system’ goes away and better guys can step up.

AD's and UHSAA refuse to pay officials a sufficient wage. Most new officials quit after one season because they very quickly realize that there is little opportunity to advance, the pay is low and nobody will train them. The good ol' boy network is alive and well. The top dogs always take care of themselves first and little, if any, opportunities exist for fellow officials to gain any exposure or experience. If you disagree, explain to me why the same officials work the semi-finals and finals year in and year out.I'd sign my name but I know that that would seriously affect my game assignments.
wow | 2:22 p.m. Aug. 21, 2008
That is interesting that you dont dare sign your name because you are afraid of that effecting you game assingments. Sounds like the articals regarding basketball might be true. Sounds like it needs some digging into. Ive talked to friends who ref games that tell me that it is very political. Thats to bad because some of the refs ive seen doing JV games are better that guys who oficiated when I played. And those guys are still reffing final games. Makes no sence that nobody is better than them. Or is that just part of the good old boy system
A thought | 2:47 p.m. Aug. 21, 2008
The activities association does not pay the officials. Individual schools that contract their services pays for the officials. As far as training I'm all for it. I'd have to say after 30 years of coaching in Utah the officials do a pretty good job. As far as the good old boys, Thanks for being dedicated to high school sports, whatever sport that might be. The activities association could not operate without them. Thanks again for your time and effort it takes to make it happen.
Good ol Boy system | 4:44 p.m. Aug. 21, 2008
This cracks me up. While i agree that in most sports there is a good ol boy system, this is not true in football. If you are good, you will move up and do bigger games. It is that simple. I also referee basketball, and in utah, there is a good ole boy system. But i think that in both levels, if you are good, you will do more games. That simple. As far as the same guys doing all the championship games, that is not true. While some officials conisistently work the championship games, others are doing more and more. 5A football championship game last year, 3 out of hte 5 had never done a championship game. I do agree that there needs to be a pay raise, and better training. If you are good, you will get games.
How to use the money | 9:18 p.m. Aug. 22, 2008
I agree with paying officials. They need to do this to get better officials. However, if I read this article correctly the money is to be used to benefit others. Considering they years that Kelly Critchfield has put into officiating and his battle with cancer, I would hope that a very good donation is made to him. I can't think of a better person or better cause to use some of the money.
