This show was hysterically funny. It seems that Erica is some how critquing this production through a slanted vision however. Why is it that she dislikes anything at RMT based solely on its small hole in the wall location? I would think that it would be more remarkable that a show of this scale and magnitude was dares, and even pulled off in the confined space. Let alone pulled off so well that the show would have to be delayed be all the waiting the would need to happen for the audience to stop laughing so they could see and hear the next joke.
I don't think a theatre's architecture and or stage limitations has any baring on the quality of the performances given, maybe just the amount of set that can be crammed on to it.
Kudos, to Christian, for being brillant with the use of space, that is the TRUE critic of the space limitaions.
As for the sound issues? That is one area we can deffinately agree on Erica. No need for such a massive sound system in such an intimate space, but we all get ears blown out more in a Megaplex.

I am a bit puzzled by the assumption that the reason it was hard to follow EVERYTHING that is going on some how has to do with Rodger's stage. I saw this production at Weber State in 2006 (incidentally also hillariously funny, and I think JD Madsen was in it as Daniel Brown there too), and they have a much larger stage, and it didn't matter, you still couldn't follow everything going on. thats half of the fun of this piece, is not matter where you look on the stage there is always something or someone to see that will make you smile. You could go every night and specifically follow just one of the actors in the performance and see a different show each time you went, find it just as funny.
Go Pirated! Excellent evening of entertainment. Everyone should go and see this show. You will never regret it for a moment. and you will be quoting it for years to come.

If you can't see all of the stage from every seat, it is a problem. If parts of the set block parts of the show, it is a problem.
So all you Rodgers apologists need to realize that you don't have the perfect theater like you pretend to here.
If I miss gags because I can't see them, I'm not gettting my money's worth. I saw the show at the Grand and it worked because their stage is huge. I could follow all the action without any problems.

Theater Space is right! I went to "Pirated" with my mom. I didn't see the same cast as the reviewer. But my mom and I had to sit on opposites sides of the theater. At intermission, we swaped stories of the gags the other didn't see. I couldn't see anything going on in the vocalists sound booth, and my mom could see very little of some of the other stuff. The reviewer is right on this one.
I'm not sure why everyone is all upset... it was a very night review and a really great show!

True the Rodgers stage is small and confined, but you do with what you have and go from there, right? It could be worse; it could be theater in the round and you watch the back of the actors' heads at least a quarter of the show. They don't have a malfunctioning million dollar stage, but in the not too distant future they will have a new state of the art facility that will rival any other in the salt lake area. Pirated was very funny and very well done. I can't wait to see what they can do with a new theater without such space limitations.

What the State is lacking are audiences who can appreciate all types of theatre and venue. While I don't always care for musicals, it seems like that is what the Utah audiences like best. I especially don't like musicals in the round. Musicals are usually presentational so I'd rather see one in a unique little theatre than in the round. Utah needs to diversify it's culture and applaud the theatre companies that are willing to operate with less. In all the theatre I've seen in the different States I've lived in, it is the smaller companies that bring a real sense of culture. The big theatres are great too. Don't get me wrong. So get out and support the small theatres, it might be just the thing to open your eyes to the various forms of theatre that are offered here.

You always have a great eye for shows. I was there on Saturday night and agree whole-heartedly with your take.
And I always love your ability find similar shows (ie singing in the rain).
Thanks!
