Doesn't Sugar House have a Master Plan that limits building heights and mandates a historical context for new construction?
It is a shame that the look and feel of Sugar House has been destroyed forever only to be replaced by a developer's money-making scheme.
I urge the Planning Commission and the City Council to limit this development's height to that of the surrounding buildings. This will at least preserve some of the old feel of Sugar House and will prevent it from becoming the next Gateway.

Wow, that artist's rendering of the proposed development is awful. Mecham will ONLY committ to a "silver" certification?! He should committ to a "gold" or higher. MAYBE then I would consider supporting this project.
I love living in sugar house and this project does not represent why I love sugar house so much. I miss the local businesses, the unique buildings and the non-corprate stores. BRING IT BACK! PLEASE!!!!!

Too Bad: Yes, Sugar House has a master plan that was updated a few years ago and the dufuses in city hall amended it to allow 7- or 8-story bldgs. :P BIG MISTAKE!
Although I don't care for Mecham's development in Sugar House as it will cause too much traffic and ruin the local flavor, I don't think the city should hold up the Mecham development just because the other developer isn't ready to develop their half of the block, yet.

I am told Mecham inherited the site from his father, and SLC should require 100% bonds in place to ensure completion. Same thing for Red Mountain on the old Granite Furniture site - make them bond it 100% or we coule very well end up with partially finished, abandoned projects. Just look at the Midtown Village in Orem! Half finished and abandoned.

I've been coming to Sugarhouse for over 50 years. From the time Penney's stood tall, through the major decline and loss of the great furniture stores Southeast, Granite, and others. Its time to keep updating, modernizing, investing, creating, enjoying a neat community.
The rendering, the design, the potential; wow, it looks awesome. Congrats to Meacham for coming up with more critical mass for Sugar house to continue to make it an appealing suburban urban experience in the fun community. For some, a neat community is more than a sex shop, a couple of dumpy joints, a coffee spot to hang out, and a tattoo parlor. The block was ugly, not well designed, and didn't add to any charm of Sugarhouse. The nay sayers should take their back packs to the next dump and hang out there.

I've got a plan!
Rebuild the OLD Granite Block the way it was, with energy-efficient buildings, and rent the retail space out to the businesses who were displaced.
