Anybody BUT McCain | 7:46 a.m. July 3, 2008
And McCain's Resume is that he was a POW (he mentions it every chance he gets). If he hadn't voted to allow Torture and didn't want to perpetuate this Endless War, then perhaps, just perhaps I might vote for him. As it is, anybody who Supports Torture is EVIL.
Mike Richards | 7:55 a.m. July 3, 2008
Inflation has hit us hard. Many people wouldn't give two-cents for Mr. Obama's opinions.

Rhetoric has always been cheap and cheap politicians resort to rhetoric.

It's too bad that's all we really have in the wallet - a battered $10 bill and a crisp $1 bill (even if the $1 bill looks really phony). There are other denominations in circulation; 2s, 5s, 20s, 50s, and even 100s. I may look further down the ballot and see if there is at least a 20 there somewhere.

His resume may be clean, but he's the best option by far. It's not even close.
The Iraq war has cost a Trillion dollars ($330,000 for each American). Many projections put the total cost at over three trillion dollars. That is $1,000,000 for every man, woman and child in the United States. Are you neoCONs going to come up with a Million dollars each?
The war in Afghanistan is what caused the collapse of the Soviet Union, they literally went bankrupt.
The United States will have a similar fate if this doesn't end now.
Bush has hastened the ruin of this once great country and McCain will hasten the end even more.

Yes, but that $10 bill might fall apart completely before I get to use it. At least with the $1 I can get something from the value menu.
Arnold | 9:32 a.m. July 3, 2008
I will be glad to see George W get out of office. Should go down in history as one of the worst Presidents ever.
Re: Ernest T. Bass | 10:05 a.m. July 3, 2008
Ernest, whenever I read you comments I get the sense that you not only know exactly what is wrong with the country but that you also know exactly how to fix and can do it it in a way to make the world a better place. Have you ever run for any political office and drastically changed the way things were for the far better, or are you simply one of those opinionated citizens that feel they have the right to comment on every issue and feel that your comments and ideas are literally going to save Americans from our every struggle? Until I see you running for office somewhere, your comments have the "know-it-all-citizen" stamped on them.
Re: Arnold | 10:12 a.m. July 3, 2008
Are you really going to add yourself to the countless number of people who have already labeled Bush as the worst President in American History? Have you actually gone back through history to scrutinize what each president has done during their term? You've already looked at all their deeds and are satisfied with making your claim? Do you really know what past presidents did?
Vmax | 10:12 a.m. July 3, 2008
Re Ernest T. Bass
Your math is fuzzy! Did you add a few zeroes? 300M citizens divided into $1,000,000M (1 trillion)= $3,333.
Oh Please | 10:34 a.m. July 3, 2008
Here's another false analogy for you. Obama is a dime--his intelligence, global outlook, and obvious capability in running a campaign make him worth more than the nickel, who is John McCain, a bumbling, flipflopping old man who has no new ideas. But the nickel looks bigger!!!!
uncannygunman | 10:58 a.m. July 3, 2008
Before even getting to the weird money analogy, the letter-writer demonstrates his ignorance by implying that Wes Clark's comments about John McCain were anything other than true, common-sense observations.
To Re Arnold | 11:01 a.m. July 3, 2008
By every measure, Bush is the worst. Worst deficit in history. Worst foreign relations mess in history. Worst fiscal policy, giving the extremely wealthy tax breaks while bankrupting the treasury. Worst in terms of reality denial (manipulating scientific reports, intimidating regulators). Worst devaluation of the dollar. And worst of all, shredding of human rights: the practice of kidnapping and torture and institution of concentration camps. BUSH IS THE WORST by far. He makes Harding (previously considered the worst) look like small potatoes.
porky | 11:22 a.m. July 3, 2008
excellent example. think i'll use it when explaining to lunk-heads what the problem with BO is.
future | 11:25 a.m. July 3, 2008
one thing's for sure: no matter who wins in November, whatever problems come America's way there'll be those who will say it was Bush's fault - for years and years and years to come.

sad to see such a devisive country.
jackhp | 11:45 a.m. July 3, 2008
re: future,
And there will be those that continue to say it was Clinton's . . . right?
McCain the $10 | 11:54 a.m. July 3, 2008
But Obama is more like a crisp new $50.
Mike Richards | 12:10 p.m. July 3, 2008
Unless I've misunderstood the topic sentence in the letter to the editor, we're talking about the value or worth of the candidate.

Hot air on a hot Summer day is cheap. Hot air blowing out of Chicago is expected. Lawlessness and unruly behavior is expected from Chicago. Al Capone loved that city. Boss Tweed, although a corrupt politician from New York, was widely admired by the Democrats in Chicago. Richard J. Daley loved that city. Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. loved that city. Richard M. Daley now loves that city. Mr. Obama loves that city and the politics that have made Chicago noteworthy in the annals of decadent politics.

Conservatives have no admiration for Chicago politics. They despise the political machine that has run rampant for more than a century in Chicago.

Conservatives have an accurate ideal of worth and of value. Mr. Obama, in the eyes of conservatives, has neither worth nor value. He is just seen as hot air blowing across the nation. Hot air, in the summertime, is not hard to find - and it has no real value.

I'll take John McCain's worn-out $10 bill over Mr. Obama's counterfeit $1 bill any day.
Hatuletoh | 12:13 p.m. July 3, 2008
Is there anything more trite in a political discussion than a simile or a metaphor?

How about another one, which should not be construed as a political endorsement, but rather a demonstration that any old fool with a keyboard can type something clever:

Mr. McCain is like a cheque made out for $27.19 that you know for sure will clear if you cash it. Mr. Obama is like a cheque for $1,000,000.00 that may clear if cashed, but probably won't. If you could only choose one to take to the bank, which one would you choose?
Utah values | 12:23 p.m. July 3, 2008
I've said the only values most Utahan understand are perceived by a dollar sign. The largest organization in Utah seems to ranks presidents more on how he stands on capital gains tax than whether he lying or advocated torture.
Arnold | 12:43 p.m. July 3, 2008
To :Re Arnold

I said one of the worst Presidents in history. Sure is a candidate for the worst time will tell.
Anonymous | 12:50 p.m. July 3, 2008
A utah voter is going to vote republican. No analogy necessary.
Go Obama. An empty resume is better than a mind bereft of thought. Sorry, George.
Horrible Metaphor | 12:58 p.m. July 3, 2008
Horrible metaphor.

re: Ernest T. Bass 10:05
I have no answers (I've never pretended to).
What I do know is that there never was a justification for Iraq. As it currently stands, the cost of the Iraq war is $300,000+ for every man, woman and child in the US. If cost projections continue on pace, it will cost each of us $1,000,000 for this war.
The US may never recover from that deficit.
You tell me, how does the republican party EVER plan on paying for it??
What I do know is that we're in a mess and it's mostly caused by republicans who've dominated the White House for 20 of the past 28 years.

Re Ernest T. Bass
You must be a product of the government's monopolistic education system. Your numbers don't make sense, but I guess you think that if you repeat them over and over people will believe them.
Mike Richards | 3:21 p.m. July 3, 2008
Mr. Bass,

Perhaps you should have worked harder to become one of the Generals serving on the Armed Forces Committee, then your opinion would have some weight. Perhaps, then, when you had access to real facts, not headline news from your favorite news outlet, your opinion might be different than it is today.

To even insinuate that men and women of valor, who have spent their entire lives protecting this Nation from enemies, foreign and domestic, would not have the courage to speak up and to speak out to the President or to his advisers, is to insinuate that our military leaders are cowards.

To insinuate that the troops who serve in the war zones are puppets who blindly follow their leaders is to insinuate that our brave soldiers have no courage to stand up for right and to do right against any enemy, including others in the military.

One thing is certain. You have the ability and the desire to parrot liberal talking points. That doesn't doesn't amount to much, does it?
War vs. Car accidents | 3:30 p.m. July 3, 2008
So with the "fact" that we are in a war without justification which has killed 4,000+ soldiers and other innocent victims, why is the media and the entire country complaining about this catastrophe when thousand of Americans are driving under the influence of alcohol and to us its simply an accident? It continues every year and around 60,000 Americans die. We have taken out Saddam, given Iraq its first democratic election, and taken out much of al-Qaeda, yet it's a waste of time?
Willie | 4:14 p.m. July 3, 2008
This is a good analogy, based on truth.
only in the reddest state | 4:35 p.m. July 3, 2008
Comparing Sen. Obama to a dollar bill comes from the same mindset as comparing him to sock monkey.

They don't call Utah the reddest state in America for nothing.
Utah Dem | 6:45 p.m. July 3, 2008
I would imagine that most voters in this country are not happy with either of the Republican or Democratic candidates. But, if we have to chose between the two, and yes it is only between those two because third parties in this country are just not strong enough, than you dear voter need to decide do we want to try a new face (Obama) who I hope will eventually come up with some new ideas to help this country; or with a lifer (McCain) who has been in office since 1983.

Remember McCain did attend Annapolis, graduated 5th from the bottom of his class. And comes to this presidential race with a lot of baggage for past misdeeds.

If we are so critical of Obamas associations than we need to also be critical of McCains.

Good luck voters.

Ah... Mike you said:

"To insinuate that the troops who serve in the war zones are puppets who blindly follow their leaders is to insinuate that our brave soldiers have no courage to stand up for right and to do right against any enemy, including others in the military."

Ah. . . our brave soldiers do have to blindly follow their leaders. They do not have a choice but to follow orders, except in extreme cases.

Person at 10:05 you said:"or are you simply one of those opinionated citizens that feel they have the right to comment on every issue"

You know, not only do they feel it but opinionated citizens do have a right to comment on every issue.

What country do you live in?
great Democrat | 7:41 p.m. July 3, 2008
McCain is a wonderful Democrat - unfortunately the Dems want to stick us with a hardcore Socialist. Don't believe me? Credit for community service? puh-leez -
Hey MArk 6:54 - in America you can still comment on issues - unfortunately in the "enlightened"countries you think America aspires to be (Canada, England, France et al) freedom of speech no longer exists ....
Ernest T. Bass | 9:06 p.m. July 3, 2008
Mike Richards: I never insinuated anything you mentioned. Republicans DO NOT have a plan for Iraq.
Iraq was NEVER a threat to my freedom, your freedom, or any other American's freedom so there was never a reason for the war to begin with. Bush knew it. Cheney knew it, yet they both plotted and planned and lied to start it. So far, the cost for the war in Iraq is $330,000 for every man, woman and child in America and that cost will likely hit $1,000,000 for each of us.
That will NEVER be paid off.
The Soviet Union collapsed because they went bankrupt fighting in Afghanistan in the 80s. The US will go bankrupt fighting in Iraq some 20 years later.
Mike, tell me what the plan is.
There is no plan and you know it. The republican party was hi-jacked by insane religious wingnuts and the entire country will pay the price for it.
We need answers, not more problems yet all repugs give us are more problems.
What is the plan?
One final thought: The only American terrorsit to hit the US was a conservative: Timmothy McVey.
RE: eanest | 9:20 p.m. July 3, 2008
You forget all those envitomental terroists.

I think they are liberal.

OR liberal vietnam protestors, who bombed recruitment offices and rotc offices.

OR the guy who sent mail bombs to certain people because he hated technolgy.

liberals have numerous terrorists.
Mark B | 9:21 p.m. July 3, 2008
gD at 7:41 probably thinks he's scored a big coup by calling a name or two, throwing out an outrageous and unprovable accusation, then heading for the sunset daring anyone to follow. It's like having been full circle from the original published letter, which had almost no content at all except a silly analogy. gD's technique, taken from the Spiro Agnew Book of Insults and Putdowns is basically to say "Oh, yeah? Well, under your guy it would be even worse!" And he's using Cheney's inside source - none at all. I think even I could post a better fear piece, but ya gotta go with what ya got, I guess. You can fool some of the people ALL of the time.
mark | 12:26 a.m. July 4, 2008
Dude at 7:41 said to me: " Hey MArk 6:54 - in America you can still comment on issues - unfortunately in the "enlightened"countries you think America aspires to be (Canada, England, France et al) freedom of speech no longer exists ...."

What are you talking about? I mean really? I talked about countries USA aspires to be?!

Where do these people come from?!!
