If Kyle were smart he would get some of his current players signed up for this camp. It might help make this years game a little more competitive.

Ouch!

You're probably right.....
RE: Whit and Co. | 7:10 a.m. June 24, 2008
Last time I checked Beck wasn't exactly the master at beating the U. Its nice to see a former Coug possibly get a shot at starting for the worst team in the league.

Re: Whit and Co. | 7:35 a.m. June 24, 2008
Better to be the starting QB for the worst team in the league last year than be the worst QB in the league (alex smith) on definitely the worse team in the leauge next year.
High Road | 7:40 a.m. June 24, 2008
I guess that I will take the high road and say that even as a Ute, I respected Beck and thought that he was a good person and a good competitor.
It is interesting though that Cougs go on and on about how Utes can't stop thinking about them all season long, but then you see an article on one of your alum and the first comment is bashing or talking about the Utes.
Don't the Cougars have anything positive to say about Beck?
Alma the Wiser | 7:44 a.m. June 24, 2008
Re: Whit and co.

That's funny. I hope byU fans have enjoyed their short stay at the top.

Poor byU fans. None of you realize that byU's best teams during the last 20 years, both in football and basketball, can barely beat average or less than average teams from Utah.

Your days of beating Utah have come to an end.

Utah 34 ByU 23
Re: High Road | 7:44 a.m. June 24, 2008
What can they say? Maybe they could point out how he holds the record for most fumbles in one minute.
Anonymous | 7:46 a.m. June 24, 2008
Typical response from Cougar fans....oh well they feel insecure that they don't have any talent at the offensive skill positions in the NFL anymore. They haven't had anyone since Steve Young. But even Utah State can say they have Chris Cooley and Kevin Curtis. Utes can say they had Mike Anderson, Kevin Dyson and Steve Smith.
Re: | 8:00 a.m. June 24, 2008
Anonymous: The best Cougars are in church on Sunday instead of on the football field.

Re: High Road: Fumbles? That's funny.

Alma the Wiser: You would actually give the Cougars 23 points?

High Road: Beck isn't a Cougar anymore. Now he's a Dolphin. Get over it.

Everyone else. Funny!
Lori B. | 8:03 a.m. June 24, 2008
Why are these comments so petty, so often? This article is about John Beck, not BYU or Utah. I'm a BYU fan and I cheer FOR my school, not AGAINST the Utes. When any players from Utah make it to the NFL I cheer them all because it helps all the athletes in the MWC. Can't we just support those who have succeeded and encourage those that are just getting started?
Anonymous | 8:31 a.m. June 24, 2008
Looking forward to seeing Beck Play this year. I cant wait for the season to start and let the players do the talking instead of reading comments from fans that talk total nonsense!
Hollywood | 8:43 a.m. June 24, 2008
C'mon, it was a funny comment by "Whit and Co." And even though I'm a Cougar grad and fan, I cheer for any Utah players in the NFL, whether they played at BYU, UofU, Utah State, etc.

Don't count out Alex Smith too quickly. He showed some good promise under Turner, but injuries and a terrible coordinator and O-line destroyed his season last year. Under Mike Martz, Smith could very well be the Most Improved player in the league this year.
CO Coug | 8:45 a.m. June 24, 2008
Now-now children... the article is about John Beck and the NFL, let's keep the BYU/Utah trash talk to another article. How about a positive comment about a MWC player who may start in the NFL, at the most difficult position? Or is that to much to ask?

Good luck to John, hopefully he will do well this year.

For the record, I enjoy seeing all MWC players do well, BYU or Utah (John or Alex).

Like being around kids at recess.....always fighting about something.
Ernest T. Bass | 8:50 a.m. June 24, 2008
JB will be in the hall of fame withing two or three years. He's that good.
More Competitive? | 8:53 a.m. June 24, 2008
What a stupid thing to say when both Cougar wins came at the very end of the game, one after the clock read 00:00.

Things may or may not shake out differently in the NFL, but Alex Smith was twice the college quarterback that Beck was.
Luke Staley | 9:05 a.m. June 24, 2008
Hey I had a good career in the NFL.
Petty | 9:10 a.m. June 24, 2008
Most of the petty comments come from adolescent male fans (of both schools, as well as rival schools and conferences) who resort to throwing spitballs at each other because they're incapable of thoughtful, intelligent conversation.

Beck is just learning the ropes in the NFL. Barring injury, with his skills and work ethic, I expect him to have a long and successful NFL career.

It's nice to see him involved in charity work as well. Giving something back to the sport that has given him so much.
RE: Lori B. | 9:12 a.m. June 24, 2008
No, that isn't any fun. Being a fan is about having fun. If you were a true BYU fan you would not be pulling for the u in any way at all!
Anonymous | 9:13 a.m. June 24, 2008
Alma the Wiser, I think you are mistaken. You have to admit, the 1996 BYU Football team was pretty dominant against in-state teams. They dominated Utah and destroyed Utah State. Almost 400 yards rushing against the Utes.
The Big Tuna | 9:19 a.m. June 24, 2008
Chad Henne will be our starter by the end of the season.
Beck is a class act | 9:21 a.m. June 24, 2008
John Beck is a class act. He certainly struggled last year, but he was a rookie thrown into an impossible situation. Steve Young was able to sit on the bench in the NFL for almost ten years behind two of the best quarterbacks ever before being designated the starting QB. I think it is too early to tell if Beck has what it takes to suceed in the NFL. My guess is that he does. I think he will do a lot better than Detmer did, but probably will not eclipse Steve Young. Go Beck!
danburtreynolds | 9:37 a.m. June 24, 2008
I think Harmon is a little off by saying that Parcels will make the job Beck's to lose. Most everything I have heard from the NFL analysts say the job starting job will likely be McCown's and that Henne coming in is not a good sign for Beck's. They say that based on Parcell's propensity to go with a QB with more years under his belt (remember The Tuna brought in Bledsoe and Romo was 3 or 4 years in the league before he got the starting job). As a U fan I wish Beck well, but realistically, I think it will be with another team in a few years.
Alma the Wiser | 9:40 a.m. June 24, 2008
Re: Anonymous

Allow me to clarify my comment. The last two years of byU football and basketball have been two of the best during the last twenty years. Not THE best, but definitely top 5 seasons for both sports.

Utah, however, has been below average in basketball for the last couple of years but nearly beat one of the best byU teams from the last three decades.

Similarly in football, Utah lost 5 and 4 games these past two years but in both years they were only one play away from beating two of the top 4 or 5 teams byU has fielded since 1984.

Utah will sweep byU in football and basketball this year.
Nyron P | 9:42 a.m. June 24, 2008
Luke Staley is still the most exciting player ever to play at BYU. Best wishes to John Beck. Study his collegiate career. It was a very difficult road! But it ended happily. I wish bloggers from other schools would keep to their own blog and leave BYU alone.
Ty Detmer | 9:51 a.m. June 24, 2008
Hey don't forget about me....7 INTERCEPTIONS IN ONE NFL GAME. I HOLD THE NFL RECORD.
Can't Wait | 9:52 a.m. June 24, 2008
I really hope that Beck wins a few games this year....maybe then we can see those tears roll down his face as he is replaced by Henne at the end of the year......wa wa wa
Provo Career College | 9:53 a.m. June 24, 2008
Beck had better dust off that Medical Assistant diploma he received from Provo Career College.

Henne will be the Dolphins starter for years to come.
BJ | 9:57 a.m. June 24, 2008
As much as I hated Jo. Beck for what he did to me at the end of the Utah game, you can't help but wish the kid the best. Once player leave the Y, it's really ok to wish them well and hope they have a successful career. The situation between Alex and John was more similar than different last year. Crappy teams, crappy line play and questionable coaching do not lead to success at the NFL level. The only difference between the two is Alex's injury. I hope John and Alex can have their break out seasons in 2008. Go 9ers!
itake uteduece | 10:01 a.m. June 24, 2008
John is a class act and I wish him well in the NFL. If the Dolphin gig does not work out he will always have 4th and goal against the hated ones and for most that would be enough.
RE: Alma the Dense | 10:02 a.m. June 24, 2008
People who try and do "football math" to analyze how two teams will fare just show they know nothing about true competition. When two rival schools play eachother with the emotion present in the Utah-BYU contests, measurables are meaningless. Those games will always be hyper-competitive and I am grateful they are. This business about better teams almost losing to lesser teams is complete garbage in the context of the rivalry between the two schools.
Believer | 10:10 a.m. June 24, 2008
Beck had lots of doubters even leading into '06 (despite having played well in '05). He is a hard worker and will improve. I have no doubt that his hard work will translate into success on the playing field.

It can't hurt that Parcell's in cleaning up the team and improving the OL either.
Beck still plays | 10:17 a.m. June 24, 2008
I'm so used to BYU fading out in the pros ever since Steve Young retired. I'm waiting for John Beck to cry after he loses the first game of the season, thats assuming he plays. Steve Smith, Alex Smith names that NFL fans outside of Utah actually know. The 49ers will have do a lot better than the Dolphins this year, and how many number 1 picks has BYU had? Alex Smith will have a good season this year. Maybe Beck can be the NFL's next Brandon Doman
6th round pick | 10:26 a.m. June 24, 2008
Who cares when the player goes in the draft. It does NOT translate to success on the field.

Think Alex Smith, one of the biggest busts in Number one pick history, up there with Ryan Leaf.

What round did Tom Brady go in?
Re: dense and believer | 10:27 a.m. June 24, 2008
Dense: Just like it was close in '04, right? In case you haven't noticed, KW has been forced to bring a knife to the gunfight. Second string QB in '05, no running game in '06, and half his team out with injury in '07(not literally). If 7, 8, and 9 wins are what he posts under those circumstances, I can't wait to see what he does when he is bringing a full allotment of weapons to the fight.

Believer: Yes, Parcells was brought in to clean up the team. Unfortunately for Beck, Parcells views him as part of the mess left behind by the old staff. Why else would he have drafted Henne?
RE: Lori B. | 10:32 a.m. June 24, 2008
NO
Alex smith as #1 pick | 10:39 a.m. June 24, 2008
probably the best desicion ever made!!!

utahphinsfan | 11:33 a.m. June 24, 2008
As a lifelong & hardcore Dolphins fan who happens to be a U graduate, I was thrilled when the phins drafted Beck rather than Brady Quinn.

I was happy when the phins drafted Henne as well. Miami's QB situation has been a disaster since Marino retired. Now they have 2 real good young guns.

Back in the day, most here were crazy about the Niners.

Miami has never gotten any love or respect here. So, my fear is that everyone here (especially the local sports media) will jump on the Dolphins bandwagon when Miami rises from the ashes especially if Beck is Marino's heir.
Re:Utahphinsfan | 12:09 p.m. June 24, 2008
What if he is Cleo Lemon's heir?
re:re: dense and believer | 12:14 p.m. June 24, 2008
Dense is right man, the rivalry brings up so much intensity that it is always competitive. The game in '04 is possibly an exception in recent years, but it was more a more competitive game than most thought it would be, especially the first half.

Actually I love this fact about the rivalry because it is always going to be a good game. Honestly how many times in the last 10 years has the game been decided by less than a touchdown. 9 if my memory is accurate. It just makes the rivalry that much better that it's always a close competitive hard fought game coming down to the wire.
ALMOST | 12:51 p.m. June 24, 2008
Yeah, Utah has had a lot of almosts the last few years. Truth! He's got us there cougar fans, the Utes have almost beat us in 6 of the important sporting events, but they won in NONE of them. Keep up the almosts Utah, you may almost beat us again this year but don't count on it.
Yo, Ty... | 12:58 p.m. June 24, 2008
Hate to break it to you, but your 7 INTs in a game isn't a record. It's tied for second, actually. Jim Hardy of the Cardinals holds the record with eight. You're tied for second with about seven other guys. So curl up with your Heisman and the 50 or so records you still hold, and count the cash you earned holding a clipboard for Favre and others.
utahphinsfan | 1:06 p.m. June 24, 2008
I doubt Beck will be Lemon's air or Harrington's for that matter. FWIW, Brady Quinn will go on to have a Rick Mirer like career.

Beck is the best QB to come out of that school down south since Detmer. Sorry to disappoint all you Sean Covey fans. lol?
Still Open | 1:07 p.m. June 24, 2008
Oh yeah, and Harline's still open....
geezer | 1:29 p.m. June 24, 2008
I hope the best for Beck, even though I have some doubts. He'll have to have a good year this year or he may be long gone from Miami. He improved every year at BYU so maybe he'll do the same for the Dolphins. I wish the best for all NFL athletes that played for the Y or the U, including the Utes two Smiths.
Still open at the mall | 1:32 p.m. June 24, 2008
Harline's still open and working at the mall....LOL
Troutman | 1:43 p.m. June 24, 2008
Harmon: Why is the headline called BYU FOOTBALL:????

Doesn't and isn't Beck now playing for the Miami Dolphins????? Why is a 'FORMER headline news?
Maybe if he had done something? Last time I checked BECK wasn't your household name!

Shawn Murphey is more of a story, signing with the Fish, and coming from a University where everyone in this State of ours trashes the poor Aggies. And I mean poor! It is amazing that the Aggies can even exist in Football considering their lack of money! Sure would be nice if the Aggies had a sugar daddy like the "Ewes" legislature and their Olympic Taxpayer Stadium, or the "Zoobs" Church funds! Now, make sure all of you Utah types, Mo's or non-Mo's start bashing USU after I post these comments. Start making fun of them, like you usually do, and start dissing them because of their Location and Logan, Cache Valley, Farmers, etc. etc.
Make sure your egocentric remarks point out how much better you are because you have more money! I got news for youse types, all your money and clout mean nothing in the next life! I will be living in my mansion right next door!
Harline vs Staley | 1:47 p.m. June 24, 2008
Harline isn't as good as selling cell phones as Luke staley is across the hall at provo mall.
Re: Alma the not so Wise | 1:56 p.m. June 24, 2008
The only true test of how good a team is, is not how they've performed for one or two games during the season, but how they've performed over the entire season. An 11-1 record is vastly superior to a 1-11 record, regardless of who the 1 win or loss was against.

Since their OOC (out-of-conference) opponents vary, the only meaningful comparison of the football programs at BYU and Utah is how they've done playing the same teams, that is, in conference, year after year after year.

Based on that criteria, Utah was vastly superior during the first 40 years of the rivalry. BYU has been vastly superior for the last 45 years of the rivalry.

Since 1962, when BYU and Utah joined the newly created WAC:

WAC record
BYU -- 189-71-2 (72%), 19 WAC championships
Utah -- 124-188-2 (50%), 2 WAC championships

MWC record
BYU -- 46-20-0 (70%), 4 MWC championships
Utah -- 42-24-0 (64%), 3 MWC championships

Bowl games are fun. Head-to-head wins establish bragging rights for the year. But conference records provide the most accurate and unbiased comparison of the programs.
Correction: | 1:59 p.m. June 24, 2008
Utah's WAC record:

Utah -- 124-118-2 (50%), 2 WAC championships
Re: Beck ...| 10:17 a.m | 2:05 p.m. June 24, 2008
"I'm so used to BYU fading out in the pros ever since Steve Young retired."

That's because you're young, you don't follow BYU football, and you have very limited knowledge of football history.

I suppose you've never heard of Chad Lewis, as just one example.
