it is a sad day when religion is keeping you from your own team. I'll be there screaming my head off and enjoying my sunday. GO JAZZ and sit boozer
Jazz fan | 11:43 a.m. May 8, 2008
I, like Larry Miller, will not be in attendance at the game on Sunday. I appreciate someone in his position really believing in something, but also not forcing those beliefs on others and respecting how they want to live. Hopefully the Jazz win the next two so we can go to game 6!
Thank you | 11:44 a.m. May 8, 2008
Larry for setting the example.

Please, MR Miller, get with it, you can not say its for religious reasons, thats a nice feel good story, Why do you serve beer at the basketball games and allow half naked chicks dance around? If you are so religious and follow your church leaders, why don't you shut down your movie theatres on sudays and stop showing R rated movies.... oh wait you want the money that they bring in... Nice going MR miller.
Not Going... | 11:52 a.m. May 8, 2008
I am not going to the game on Sunday as well, however, I will be watching at home with my mom...since it is Mother's Day and she is a Jazz Fan!
Me too | 11:53 a.m. May 8, 2008
I also won't be there .. BECAUSE I CAN'T GET TICKETS!!!
He'll probably | 12:02 p.m. May 8, 2008
Sell his seats to Laker fans while he's at it.

Just a strange, arbitrary and silly place to draw a line in the sand.

And we wonder why Utah remains a national joke.
another thank you | 12:06 p.m. May 8, 2008
lamo has no clue. I appreciate someone who will stick up for their values and beliefs. We all have our free agency to do, buy,and see what we want. Larry is sticking to his. No one is "forcing" you to go to the game, the movie or to buy beer. That is totally the individual's decision. I guess if we were all like Larry, there would be a "no-show" at the game on Sunday. But we're not, so lamo you have the options of going or not. Larry didn't make that decision for you
John in Tucson | 12:11 p.m. May 8, 2008
LAMO....good points
Hypocrite | 12:24 p.m. May 8, 2008
Larry Miller is a joke. We've all seen him behave like a complete jerk in the past at Jazz games, but apparently, that was only Monday thru Saturday. I'm curious if the Jazz were ever to make it to a 7th game in the championship series, if Larry would be so sanctimonious if the game were on a Sunday. Leave it to Utah to put a religious spin on a basketball playoff game. How utterly pathetic.

Funny that people pick at Larry. I think the dude owns the State of Utah.. ha. ha. So Larry, do as you please.. enjoy your Sunday any way you want!
Dean Moriarty | 12:36 p.m. May 8, 2008
Great stage to show the world his commitment to LDS principles. If he won't watch his team on Sunday, he must be a righteous man, right?

But then again, we shouldn't judge someone for how they choose to spend their Sunday. There's activities I stay away from on Sundays, too (the nba is not one of them).
Big D | 12:39 p.m. May 8, 2008
I like LAMO's point of view. He can show movies like Saw and Hostel in his theaters and sell beer at the Jazz and Bees games, but won't attend a playoff game because it is on a Sunday. And won't even listen to it on the radio. Gimme a break. I know for sure we will never get an NFL team in Utah then.
Get the story straight | 12:50 p.m. May 8, 2008
If you're going to showboat for Jesus (why else would you talk to the media about this anyway), then live it. In the Stockton to Malone era playoffs Larry would "not go to the arena for religious reasons" for a Sunday game, but then would be interviewed on camera under the stands as the players were leaving the court at the end of the game. Who cares what you do - just do it for the same reasons you claim to.
49WRLPAL50 | 12:58 p.m. May 8, 2008
Gee Larry, since you think that working on Sunday is such a bad thing, shouldn't you give your employees the day off too? Just tell the Lakers that they can have the next game by default because nobody should work on Sunday in Utah.
Come on | 12:58 p.m. May 8, 2008
Why is this even a story. It's definetley not a new thing. The sad part for the rest of the population is that Big D is absolutley correct. Religion is so overbearing in the area, that we will never get an NFL team to call our own. There's no way we could scrum up 70,000 to 80,000 people to fill a stadium on a Sunday. All this priniciple and moral talk doen't come from people's beliefs, it comes from these people that are scared of what their neighbors may think and say in the knitting circles if they are seen going to a game on a Sunday afternoon. I guess it just has to be what it is. We all live where we live and will have to get over it eventually.
Huh? | 12:59 p.m. May 8, 2008
From what I see on here if someone doesn't do everything right they are some kind of hypocrite if they try to do something right. That does not make sense to me. Showing a rated R movie at your theater or selling something that you don't indulge in yourself does not make you some kind of sinner.

Do you want Larry Miller deciding what you can watch and what you can buy?
Thoughts from a Laker fan | 1:02 p.m. May 8, 2008
Keep picking at Larry, he has brought a lot to the state of Utah including the Jazz. Who knows if you would even have had an NBA team here if it wasnt for him. His personal life is his business. I cant believe how so many people get so caught up in other peoples personal choices! Get a life people and at least thank the guy for bringing entertainment to Utah as well as business! Basketball, theatres, restaurants, racetracks, I think he even owns your AAA baseball team. I doubt many of you could even dream of doing a portion of that..
LAMO - Story | 1:05 p.m. May 8, 2008
The only thing lame about this is the story itself. Larry isn't talking to the media about this, it was a question asked to him. He simply answered it. It doesn't matter the history of Larry Miller, he's doing what he feels he needs to do. He has said before that "life is much bigger than basketball", and he probably is trying to live by that belief. I'm not going to criticize any one for watching the game with your mom, or someone for going to the game... do what ever you want. As for me, I'm going to church and watching the game after. Go Jazz...pound the pompous Kobe, Phil, and company.
the media | 1:06 p.m. May 8, 2008
"get the story straight".. the media probably asked him thats why its in the paper.. When its the playoffs the media covers everything they can get their hands on!
Why?? | 1:10 p.m. May 8, 2008
Why is this even news?
Who cares whether or not LHM is there?
joe | 1:16 p.m. May 8, 2008
Have you already forgotten the flap over Brokeback Mountain? If LHM followed Lamo's advice, you'd still whine and moan. It doesn't matter what he does, you will find a reason to criticize, judge, find fault and whine. That's what you do best. You can't just let someone live his life the way he wants to. No, that's not good enough for you. You have to be the paragon of virtue. You have to be self-righteous. You have to judge others so you won't have to face your own pathetic little lives.

Now I wonder: Were you born a whiner or did you learn how to be one. Maybe we should have a Whiners Pride Day; you can have a parade and everything.

So congratulations Lamo, John in Tucson, Hypocrite, Big D, et al for making your parents so proud of the whiners you've become.
more thoughts from a Laker Fan | 1:17 p.m. May 8, 2008
"come on" the average NFL stadium is 50,000. College Stadiums are more the 70-100,000 seat range. LA was looking at having an NFL team come to the Coliseum which holds nearly 100,000. They knew an NFL team would barely fill half of the seats! And that was in LA. You are right though that SLC is a ways from getting an NFL team.
Hoosier Coug | 1:21 p.m. May 8, 2008
I cannot believe some of the laughable comments here on the post. You sound like you believe that Miller had called a press conference simply to announce that he was not going to attend. Did you ever think that maybe a news source had called and asked, and that he [gasp] decided to tell the truth?

His decisions to make things available (R-Rated movies, beer, etc.) to those who chose to use it and his choice to not utilize them himself does not mark him as a hypocrite.

I find it amazing the vitriol that occurs on these posts every time religion is mentioned. If Miller decided to bring the Jazz to Utah and not sell beer, people would call him controlling. If he decided not to show R-rated movies, many would say that he was stifling freedom of speech.

I find it amazing that there is MORE tolerance here in Indiana (Catholic country) for Mormons -- and any other religion -- than there is in Utah.
Simply amazing!! | 1:59 p.m. May 8, 2008
I cant believe they used tax payers money to help build the Delta Center/ESA. When did this happen? It's an outrage, maybe the powers that be can rectify the problem and collect rent from them the next several years. I think a dollar a year should cover it. What was wrong with the Salt Palace? The DC/ESA will never work we will be stuck with the bill. Jazz will never last!

Attach a voided check stub it's coming out of your account!

Thats ok at least Franklin Covey Field was 100% privately funded. What? No way! LHM owns that too?! Gasp!

Is Mayor Petey on LHM pay roll? We need a congressional inquiry! Maybe Mayor Petey will use Miller's seats on Sunday.

What a hypocrite! He wont show, but he's making all his employee's show up for work and he wont hesitate to cash the big fat checks its going to bring in.

I wish every last ESA and Jazz Employee including the players would do the sane thing!

Remember folks the whole Sunday thing, isn't a Mormon thing its one of the big ten! Whats good for the goose should be good for the gander, I guess not!
Escaped SLC (thank God!) | 2:42 p.m. May 8, 2008
No wonder the rest of the country thinks Utah is a joke. It is. Even the southern Baptist extremists wouldn't wave their religion flag like that. Pathetic. BTW, what's wrong with selling beer to people who want it? There are non-Mormons in Utah, you know. I guess it's OK since the ice cream line at the Delta Center (ESA) is three or four times as long as the beer line. That's good for for "the rest of us"!

Your assumption that LHM's behavior is a positive, personal choice (yeah, right!) indicates you think everybody is Mormon or some other religion in the first place. That's pure ignorance, at best. The religious extremism and unconstitutional influence the church has on the rest of that society in Utah is disgusting. The only reason there isn't a federal crackdown is that it's nice for the rest of the country to have that culture bottled up in one place. Kind of like cults in Texas...
Hoosier Coug | 3:17 p.m. May 8, 2008
To Escaped SLC:

Funny, I didn't read anything about Miller admonishing anyone about this. I haven't read about any "flag waving".

Um, yes, Miller's decision was a personal choice. I have never heard the Mormon church demanding anyone to remain home from basketball games. And no, I don't think anyone believes that everyone is Mormon. I believe what people here are honoring is someone benignly deciding to do something he believes in. For example, I believe tree huggers are rather pathetic in what they believe in, but I honor their courage to stand up for it and do something about it.

Your comments are, frankly, the most ignorant and bigotted I have read on this post.
Never-on-a-Sunday | 4:18 p.m. May 8, 2008
I guess this means LHM will see his last Jazz game this season on Friday?
Escaped SLC (thank God!) | 5:07 p.m. May 8, 2008
Hoosier,

Look, I honor every person's right in this country to stand up for what they believe. It's a fundamental principle of our society. Miller has every right to stay home on Sunday for whatever reason he wants. That's not the point. The point is that others on this board speak as though it's some kind of grand sacrifice and that he should be placed on an altar to let the glory shine upon him. It's silly and ignorant.

To think that this act is not religious flag waving or admonishment of others is foolish and naive. How many people are as powerful and influential as LHM in Utah? It's not a long list. What he does in public has a direct influence on the public. It is indeed admonishment, whether verbalized or not.

I am an atheist. I am not a bigot. I believe in the freedom of religion. I also believe in the freedom FROM religion, which clearly does not exist in Utah. Even here in the South, where religion is very prevalent, you don't hear folks on the news talking about church leaders, members, or whatever in direct ways like you do in Utah. It's sick, really.

Is larry miiler the biggest hypocrite there is or what?

He'll take the sabbath off, but expect his employees (or make his employess?) to work.
Ho Hum | 5:32 p.m. May 8, 2008
This whole dialogue is dumb!
I agree, Larry | 6:53 p.m. May 8, 2008
A nice long drive is a great way to relieve stress! Woohoo for shades on and tunes rocking!
Hey escaped SLC | 7:04 p.m. May 8, 2008
Glad you escaped, hope more like you can be as lucky.

Re: Hoosier Coug

Amen. Amen. Amen.

If you have a religion, follow it, as the man is simply trying to do. One of the biggest problems in this world is people bashing one another for the dumbest reasons, one, as on this blog, is simply following your religious belief. Let people believe how they want, and the rest of you who just want to bash should try to find a truth you have and hold onto it and see how many people tear you down.

No one lives anything perfectly. Do you? No, then lay off with terrible downgrading comments.

Go Larry!
Go Lakers/LHM | 11:56 p.m. May 8, 2008
LHM has done more for Utah than anyone I know. He doesn't need the money from Jordan Commons, he doesn't even need the Jazz. We all draw the line in our lives somewhere and most of the time it's not a perfect line. Larry's doing what he can to at least do what he believes is right for him. I'm a Laker fan from LA and respect LHM for trying to do the best he can. Larry would be welcomed in any city in America for what he has done for his community. Instead of ripping on him you guys should put up a statue of the dude.
dmp | 3:39 a.m. May 12, 2008
Honour the sabbath day and keep it holy! Hallelujah! Amen!

For sure thats dignity and integrity!Choose you this day whom thou would worship as for Larry he will follow Jehovah!
