who told him that he was nude?

There's nothing inherently wrong with getting naked in the middle of nowhere. If I recall correctly, Colin Fletcher's The Backpacker's Bible (a favorite of my youth) extolled the virtues of hiking au naturale. I do seem to recall advice to do it only in remote areas and to keep a cover-up handy in case you ran into other hikers.

Sounds like this guy was more of a flasher who took his hobby to the trails.

On the one hand, this seems like a victimless crime.

But you just know that Medicare or Medicaid is going to pay for his skin cancer treatment one of these days.
BubbaLuv | 11:48 a.m. May 7, 2008
What's wrong with a little naked hiking? If a man and women were hiking naked together, it would be no big deal. Relax...............

The law's the law. That's why I think Utah and Arizona authorities should go after polygamists. Polygamy is expressly against the law. Utah's law is part of its constitution and is written broadly enough to prohibit the sort of "spiritual marriages" into which FLDS enter. Both the laws against nude hiking and plural marriage might be ruled unconstitutional unless challenged, but it is the duty of the attorney generals of Utah and Arizona to enforce the law, not to decide which laws might be ruled unconstutional if challenged.

Nature Boy right here in my own neighborhood! Hope he confines his activities to the Grand Canyon!!!
Mormon not offended | 12:11 p.m. May 7, 2008
I wasn't there so I can only say, unless this man was lewd and seeking attention to "shock" other hikers, there is no crime here. People get naked at remote swimming holes and hot springs all the time. I suppose a remote hike isn't much different.

Should we file charges against National Geographic for all the magazines in print at the public libraries?

My children and I have a right to NOT see a 61 year-old man naked when we're hiking in the woods, or anywhere else. If he feels that strongly about nature he needs to join a nudist camp.
I don't think so | 12:16 p.m. May 7, 2008
What if you're hiking with your kids, or some other young group. This would not be appropriate. Maybe he should get off the trail and go find some real wilderness where no one would run into him.
Mesa | 12:30 p.m. May 7, 2008
Hope he gets bitten.
amusing | 1:00 p.m. May 7, 2008
Always amusing to read the "the human body is a dirty thing" comments.
Or the "everyone knows a naked body means sexuality-- and that's dirty too!"

It's all in the eyes of the beholder, isn't it?
Prude | 1:06 p.m. May 7, 2008
Ha.. yes, what if you ARE hiking with your kids? They may see a naked man and be forever psychologically damaged. We need to teach our children that they should be extremely ashamed of their bodies and react with horror if they see any nudity, no matter the context. This is the healthiest thing to do. Do it for the children!!!
To "hiding?" | 1:13 p.m. May 7, 2008
Thanks for the best laugh of the day. :o)

The best way to de-sexualize nudity is for everyone to have a naked day.
JWK | 1:14 p.m. May 7, 2008
This guy as every right to hike in the nude if he does it on his own property and is not seen by those who would be offended by his natural hike. The problem comes from those that see him. Sure, some may not take offense, but those who do have a legitimate gripe also.

This has nothing to do with the human body being a dirty thing but it does have to do with respecting others. After all, if someone gets offended because a prayer is offered at a school, what is the difference if someone is offended by having to look at a wrinkly old man without clothes.
Anonymous | 1:16 p.m. May 7, 2008
This old man has a lot more guts than me.
Anonymous | 1:16 p.m. May 7, 2008
Why does everything become about polygamy? I am sick of it. No one wants to see a naked old man.
Re: Mormon not offended | 1:22 p.m. May 7, 2008
So you don't think it would be a shock to children to see him? Oh, and the 'crime' is indecent exposure. It's not about being offended, it's about decency. Looking, looking.....still can't find where anyone said that the human body is a dirty thing. And if Colin Fletcher says it's OK then it MUST be, right?
To "Anonymous 1:16" | 1:24 p.m. May 7, 2008
"This old man has a lot more guts than me."

Are you sure? I'm not. I haven't seen either one of you. lol

Spring is finally here, let's all go for a romp in the hills. Remember this - we're all naked under our clothes. :o)
different point of view | 1:28 p.m. May 7, 2008
Re: Prude

A thousand pardons Prude, but if I were a little kid hiking with MY parents and a naked old man came by riding a bike, I am quite sure the three of us would be laughing our (blanks) off!

Sorry to hear that would NOT be YOUR experience.

I guess I was raised a bit differently than you on such matters.
Mark | 1:31 p.m. May 7, 2008
Sunburn, mosquitoes, and deer flies, oh my!
giggles | 1:52 p.m. May 7, 2008
The best way to encourage an old man to keep his pants on, is to point and laugh hysterically at his exposed region. Funny what an effect that has.
eye of the beholder | 1:56 p.m. May 7, 2008
I'm sixty-two, retired work out regularly, watch what I eat and weigh the same as I did in high school. As you can guess, I'm not from Utah.

My wife says I'm buff and wouldn't mind seeing me riding through the wilderness in the buff which makes me laugh and laugh.

So I guess everything IS relative, isn't it?
well | 1:57 p.m. May 7, 2008
I'm offended every day; one the one hand are the "illustrated man/woman" variants I see all over the place both with and without the body piercings (scared to ask where they will pierce next) ANd I'm offended by all the incredibly fat people I see everyday and oh well...etc etc LOL
RangerGordon | 1:58 p.m. May 7, 2008
Maybe they should get the FBI involved, if Arizona is willing to make The Case of the Naked Dude an multistate incident.

Or maybe they could just relax. Nobody was harmed.
Utah? | 2:05 p.m. May 7, 2008
How did they know he was from Utah?
m | 2:06 p.m. May 7, 2008
Bottom (pun intended) line, indecent exposure includes nudity in public. I agree with the poster who said whatever he does in the privacy of his own property is his business but whatever he does in public - well lets just say there are laws. :-)
Anonymous | 2:18 p.m. May 7, 2008
This incredible crime is a breach of the homeland security act and now it is even larger due to the offender crossing state lines. I hope the FBI, CIA, ATFA is on to this. Nice to be safe 'cause one never knows where the enemy is lurking.. This is surely part of a conspiracy.
Prude | 2:19 p.m. May 7, 2008
Dear Different Point of View:

I was being sarcastic. I thought that was obvious. I suppose the obvious escapes some people.

And, m and others, pointing out that there are laws against nudity is, well, not particularly helpful to the debate. Though I suppose some people get a certain thrill out of stating the obvious. I think the real question is whether the law makes sense.

Beehive tattoo on the left cheek
the Problem . . . | 2:35 p.m. May 7, 2008
. . . is not so much that it is indecent as that it is nauseating.
Anonymous | 2:45 p.m. May 7, 2008
"He can't be naked because I don't want to see him!" Well, I don't like to see fat people in shorts and tight shirts, but they impose themselves on my every day. I don't have any right to have them arrested for it.

"I don't like it!!!!" does not define a crime.

And no, you DO NOT have a right to force others to conform to what you don't want your children to see.
obvious? | 2:51 p.m. May 7, 2008
I thought the whole point of hiking and such was getting back to nature, enjoying life as it was before nosyparkers started legislating.
Mormon not offended...reply | 2:54 p.m. May 7, 2008
I have kids. Unless the man was lewd they would probably laugh at the situation - and I would be very protective of them. When I was a kid we went rafting on the Colorado a couple times near Moab and I sometimes saw people bath and wash clothes in the nude at some campsites - usually discretely, but it was never a big deal. I believe a healthy view of sexuality is to realize how normal the human body is, even when it's old, young, fat, thin, or a different skin color. I strongly shun pornography in all it's forms and how it distorts the true beauty and appreciation we should have for our bodies.

By the way - Adam and Eve may have done much hiking in the nude, apparently Isaiah preached naked and barefoot for three years (Is 20:3); and I recall an apostle named Peter who was fishing "bare beanned and butt-nekkid" (direct quote) when the resurrected Saviour appeared to him.
wacky old laws | 2:55 p.m. May 7, 2008
There are STILL wacky puritanical laws on the books that prohibit certain sexual activities in the privacy of one's own home.

The moralistic neocons love this.

The liberals feel it is nobody's business.
to eye of the beholder | 3:01 p.m. May 7, 2008
Though you may be hard-pressed to find 'em in some counties, not every Utahn forgets to eat sensibly and exercise. I invite you and your wife to a wee trail ride on Boulder Mountain and we can compare buff-ness.
To Eye of the beholder | 3:03 p.m. May 7, 2008
You said.

"I'm sixty-two, retired work out regularly, watch what I eat and weigh the same as I did in high school. As you can guess, I'm not from Utah."

How would I guess you're not from Utah from this? I know many 60 + men and women who meet this discription. Stop disrespecting Utah with your self flattery.
Bill | 3:05 p.m. May 7, 2008
I'm a Later Day saint & I find nothing funny about a sick-o running around without clothes or sense.
Wrong Charge | 3:08 p.m. May 7, 2008
The only thing a 61-year-old man jogging in the buff on a public trail should be charged with is defacing public property.
ediddy | 3:08 p.m. May 7, 2008
Probably shouldn't prosecute as the case might be dropped for insufficient evidence.
Just a thought | 3:11 p.m. May 7, 2008
Perhaps we can make every Tuesday clothing optional days at our national parks. People who enjoy au naturale hiking can do so to their hearts' content. Those who are curious about experiencing the great outdoors in all their glory would have a way to expose themselves to it. Everyone else can find something else to do on those days.
Bh | 3:25 p.m. May 7, 2008
This adds new meaning to going on a nature hike.
What is the ATFA? | 3:35 p.m. May 7, 2008
What is the ATFA?

A member of my family is the assistant director of the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives), but I have never heard of the ATFA... is it closely related? A quick google search turned up American Task Force Argentina, American Turkish Friendship Association, Alabama Treasure Forest Association and Australian Timber Flooring Association to name a few... perhaps someone could help me figure out which of these would be interested in an interstate nude hiker?
Yikes | 4:21 p.m. May 7, 2008
A naked 61 year old! Wow, that is not something you want to see in the great out doors! Pepper spray would work wonders here.
lol | 4:25 p.m. May 7, 2008
I think this is hillarious that anyone is even debating it. Just close your eyes when you see something you don't like...oh wait you might never open them again. lol
stats don't lie | 4:40 p.m. May 7, 2008
To eye of the beholder 3:03 -

A thousand pardons, but it is common knowledge that Utah leads the nation with the amount of all-you-can-eat buffets, ice cream and candy consumption, and gross obesity.

All one has to do is put the words health, utah, government and obesity into their browser and get the official data for themselves.

Meanwhile lay off the junk food, go work out for a year and get back with me.
Spare us your perversions | 4:47 p.m. May 7, 2008
Keep your clothes on. Your private parts aren't for everyone to see. It's like talking to a two year old. No sense, except at age 61 it's now called sick in the head. Disturbing and gross, not beautiful.

I don't have to see any of you naked for the sake of my mental sexual health. Give me a break! That's Ridiculous! Quite the opposite, actually.

In fact, my sacred nature is more precious precisely because those rights to viewing are kept more exclusive. While a viewing of your body forced on an unsuspecting audience has no value, because it is freely given. I'm sorry if you view your body as having no worth, but indecent exposure won't increase that. Most people will express displeasure. Unless you have their permission, the viewing actually comes at a cost to them, hence the reaction this man got. He is now less desirable than before he took his clothes off because no one wanted to see him naked.
To prude | 4:48 p.m. May 7, 2008
Of course the law makes sense. I don't know anyone who would want nudity to be legal in public. I certainly wouldn't want every Tom, Dick and Harry (or hairy) running around naked. Although in most cases it would be laughable.

To eye of the beholder,
You make me sick - I think I'll go get more chocolate.
To just a thought | 4:50 p.m. May 7, 2008
That was great. This forum is funny.
all in the head | 5:17 p.m. May 7, 2008
The human body is not a dirty thing.
The minds of some people however, are.
