Like a case out of the old West, nine horses stolen from a ranch in Duchesne County have been recovered in Salt Lake County and Idaho.

Part of the break in the case came when investigators found two of the horses being sold on KSL.com, said Duchesne County Sheriff's Sgt. John Crowley.

At least two people were under investigation Wednesday, but no arrests had been made.

The incident began in early September when nine horses were taken from a remote ranch, Crowley said. Details of what the thieves did with the horses from that point were still being sorted out Wednesday.

The thieves reportedly tried to give at least one or all of the horses to a young female, but her parents said no, according officials. The horse rustlers also tried selling at least two of the horses on the Internet or went from house to house telling residents the animals were abandoned and they needed to find homes for them, Crowley said.

When two of the horses ended up on KSL.com, Salt Lake County Sheriff's investigators were asked to check out the Bluffdale address of the people selling the horses, said Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Paul Jaroscak.

Detectives went to the address and found two of the missing horses, Jaroscak said. A representative from the State Office of Branding also assisted in the investigation and was able to positively identify the horses as stolen, investigators said.

Further investigation in Salt Lake County led to the discovery of five more of the missing horses. Crowley said the remaining two were found in Idaho.

Crowley said Wednesday the case remains under investigation.
