Colin R. Chapman has lectured on British and Irish genealogy throughout the world. Now, family history enthusiasts in Utah will have an opportunity to hear him speak.
Chapman, a life vice president of the Federation of (British) Family History Societies, president of the Bristol & Avon Family History Society and president of the Gloucestershire Family History Society, will give two lectures at the Family History Library. He will speak Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. on "Was Your Ancestor Really Married? Marriage Laws, Rites, Records and Customs", and again Wednesday at 1 p.m. on "Genealogy in Early British Censuses, 1086 to 1841." Seating is limited.
The Family History Library in Salt Lake City will offer classes on indexing later this month. The "How to Do Indexing" course will be taught Oct. 17 at 10 a.m. in the computer lab. On Oct. 25, the same class will be taught from 9 to 11 a.m., followed by "Arbitrating Indexing Batches" at 12:30 p.m. and "Indexing Administration" at 2:15 p.m. To view the class schedule online, visit FamilySearch.org.

Symposium to address D&C
PROVO The 37th annual Sidney B. Sperry Symposium will be held this month on the Brigham Young University campus.
This year's symposium on the scriptures, titled "The Doctrine and Covenants: Revelations in Context," will be Oct. 24 and 25. Elder C. Max Caldwell, emeritus member of the Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will open the proceedings with a keynote address at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 24 in the Joseph Smith Building auditorium. Breakout sessions will follow that evening and begin again at 9 a.m. on Oct. 25. Presenters will include faculty from BYU, BYU-Hawaii and the Church Educational System.

DUP convention on Friday
The International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers annual convention will be Friday at the Sheraton Hotel, 150 W. 500 South in Salt Lake City. The public is invited.
The general meeting will begin at 10 a.m., followed by lunch at 12:30 p.m. Lunch tickets must be purchased in advance. A book sale begins at 8 a.m.
Actress, author and director Pat Davis, who directs the musical production of the Nauvoo Pageant each summer, will be the guest speaker.

Homecoming events for students
PROVO Several homecoming activities at BYU will be held for students this weekend. The 2008 homecoming theme is "Go the Distance."
"We know homecoming is a great event for our alumni, but we like to see our students become excited about this annual celebration," said Tamera Gray of student leadership.
Noontime activities will be held today and Friday at Brigham Square. A married student event, featuring dinner and a comedy show, is planned for Friday in the Wilkinson Student Center. Free tickets are available in 3400 WSC. Homecoming dances will be held Friday and Saturday at the Heber Historic Railroad, and a Cinderella-type ball will be Friday in the WSC garden court. A casual dance is planned for Saturday in the WSC ballroom.
KSL host will speak at luncheon
The BYU Management Society's October luncheon will feature guest speaker Doug Wright of KSL News Radio. The event will be today at noon in the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City. Wright has spent nearly 40 years in the broadcast industry, most of it with KSL. The Utah native is a member of the Utah Broadcast Association Hall of Fame.
