OREM, Utah -- Simple words of encouragement can go a long way.

Ask Jerry Spanos, who went from having no self-confidence, a poor grade point average, and little enthusiasm for his future to being a successful CEO of a not-for-profit school and a bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The defining moment that changed Spanos' life came on his mission in 1967 when his companion, Jim Phillips, told him that he had great skills and he should think about going to college.

The two reunited last Friday at Spanos' retirement reception. They had not seen each other since July of 1967, in Ashland Kentucky, where they served as missionaries.
