MOAB — The undefeated San Juan Broncos improved to 8-0 with a convincing 37-7 win over the Grand County Red Devils Friday night.

"I was really pleased with our effort tonight," said San Juan coach Monty Lee. "We've got so many weapons, and we want everyone to be able to contribute."

Things seemed to go San Juan's way for most of the night, right from the get-go.

Grand fumbled the ball away on its opening possession, and San Juan capitalized as senior running back Kohler Black ran it in from 20 yards out on San Juan's first play from scrimmage. Black kicked the extra point to give the Broncos an early 7-0 lead.

The Broncos forced Grand to punt on its next possession, but the punt went only a few yards, giving the Broncos the ball on the Grand 26-yard line. A few plays later, junior Jace Holliday scored on a 13-yard run to make it 13-0 for the Broncos.

In the second period, San Juan quarterback Kyle Johnson found receiver Nathan Einerson in the corner of the end zone for a 16-yard TD pass on fourth-and-goal. Black booted the extra point to give the Broncos a 20-0 halftime lead.

Midway through the third period, San Juan scored again on a fourth-and-goal situation, with Johnson connecting with receiver Lewis Sharpe for an 8-yard TD.

Down 27-0, the Red Devils continued to struggle to move, as starting quarterback Robbie Sweeten and backup QB Dalton took turns taking the snaps. Dalton's punt attempt with three minutes left in the third was blocked, and San Juan's Oliver Parker ran it into the end zone from 20 yards out. The ensuing extra point made it 34-0, one point shy of triggering the "mercy rule" wherein the clock is left running during a blowout.

Midway through the fourth period, Black connected on a 23-yard field goal that made it 37-0 and started the clock running. The Red Devils, led by quarterback Dalton, then launched a desperate drive to avoid a shutout. Dalton finally broke into the end zone on a 3-yard run as time expired, and added the extra point for good measure to account for the final tally. Dalton managed to amass 117 yards rushing on 25 carries, one of the few bright spots for Grand.

For San Juan coach Lee, remaining undefeated is a matter of playing hard every week, and not overlooking any opponents.

"Being 8-0 certainly puts a target on our back, but fortunately we've been able to stay motivated," he said.

San Juan (8-0 overall, 4-0 in region) will face the South Sevier Rams at Blanding in their regular season finale next Wednesday, Oct. 15. Meantime, Grand, which dropped to 3-5 overall, 0-4 in region, will play Millard at Moab that same evening for their final regular season game.
