PROVO — A driver's insolent gesture to a Provo police officer added impetus to a chase involving a stolen car Sunday evening.

The officer attempted to stop a vehicle for speeding late Sunday but instead got involved in a high-speed chase, according to 4th District Court documents. The driver made a U-turn, nearly hitting the office, and then sped away. As he was making his getaway, the driver stared right at the officer, flipped him an obscene gesture and smiled, according to the officer.

The motorist sped away, but he and his passenger were arrested later.

A 30-year-old Draper man was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of resisting arrest, fleeing and evading police, giving false personal information to an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, possession of a stolen vehicle, attempted aggravated assault on a peace officer and possession of stolen property.

A Payson man, 23, was booked into jail for investigation of fleeing and evading an officer, possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of stolen property.
