OREM — A man who was police say pilfered items from parked cars was arrested early Thursday after he crashed his get-away car into a tree.

Residents at the Countrywood Condominium complex at 1300 S. 1200 West saw two men looking through cars with flashlights around 2:30 a.m., said Orem Police LT. Doug Edwards. The caller said the men had gotten out of a dark blue car.

The first officer to arrive saw a dark car drive past him and the driver look at him very intently, Edwards said. Thinking these men might be car burglars, the officer flipped around and followed the car.

The car sped away, rounded a corner and jumped the curb before hitting a tree.

The driver jumped out and ran away from the still-running car, as the officer radioed his colleagues about the man's description, Edwards said. Officers caught the man a few blocks away.

Inside the car, police found three digital cameras, two cell phones, binoculars, burglary tools, someone else's checkbook and other miscellaneous items believed to be stolen, Edwards said.

The 25-year-old Eureka man was arrested and booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of burglary of a vehicle, possession of burglary tools, interference with arrest, reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident. Police are still looking for the second man.
