PROVO —- The end of ritual animal sacrifice came in utter darkness. To the shattered Nephite nation the voice of Christ asked instead for the sacrifice of "a broken heart and a contrite spirit."

But this request was nothing new or unusual, according to Dana Pike, a BYU professor of ancient scripture.
