The former embattled head of the Utah Department of Corrections was named today as the new undersheriff for Salt Lake County.

The sheriff's office announced late this afternoon that Scott Carver would be the No. 2 man in the department.

In a prepared statement, Sheriff Jim Winder said he believed the addition of Carver would "improve his ability to manage a host of complex issues and initiatives he has undertaken."

Carver replaces Beau Babka, who parted ways with the sheriff's office in July amid rumors that he and Winder had a severe falling-out.

Carver was the executive director of the Corrections Department until he was removed by Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. in early 2007. The decision to remove Carver was made after a 71-page state audit in 2006 detailed an unpleasant work environment and painted a picture of a "good ol' boys" network with preferential treatment given to certain people.

Carver was reassigned to the Utah Sentencing Commission after being removed from his Corrections position.

Carver begins his duties as undersheriff on Monday.
