The Utah basketball team received a fifth commitment for the 2009-10 season over the weekend when Matt Read, a 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward from Texas agreed to sign with Utah later this fall.

Read was being recruited by several top programs, including Michigan, LSU and Arizona State and ultimately picked the Utes over Saint Louis University, coached by former Ute coach Rick Majerus.

He played his freshman year at Texas-Arlington, but sat out with a stress fracture in his foot the next year before transferring to Collin County CC where he'll play this year. He played high school ball in Weatherford, near Fort Worth.

Jerry Mullen, who runs a Top 120 camp in Tulsa for sophomores-to-be, said Read was one of the top players there last summer and called him a highly skilled big man who can step out and shoot the three and can pass well.

Read plans to sign in November and will join a recruiting class that includes two other Texans, forward Shawn Glover and guard Marshall Henderson, College of Southern Idaho forward Jay Watkins and Jeremy Olsen, a 6-10 forward from Georgia.
