Police seek duo in car burglary
COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — Police here are asking for the public's help in locating a pair of car burglars they say stole a couple of credit cards and then went on a food-buying spree.
The burglary happened early in the morning in a residential driveway in Cottonwood Heights. Two burglars, possibly juveniles, broke out one of the windows and rummaged through a backpack left in the car, taking credit cards and an iPod, said Cottonwood Heights police officer Beau Babka.
The duo immediately went on a shopping excursion, first buying food at 3 a.m. at a local Smith's Food King, Babka said. They then went to another Smith's in West Jordan followed by another Smith's in the central part of the valley, he said.
Investigators believe the duo is responsible for at least six frauds over the past week, Babka said.
Surveillance video from some of the affected stores shows two young looking males, one with a shaved head. One was wearing a camouflage hooded sweatshirt and jacket, Babka said. The other had a hat that resembled one from either "The Cat in the Hat" or "Where's Waldo," he said.
Their vehicle was also very distinguishable. Babka said it's a four-door vehicle, possibly an Escort or Saturn, with the right passenger side panel, from the hood to the door, missing.
Babka said the incident was a good reminder of why residents should never leave valuables in their cars, even if the doors are locked.
