Man facing double murder charges makes first appearance in court
Christian Sweenten, 26, is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, both first degree felonies. Sweenten made a brief appearance before 3rd District Judge Michele Christiansen.
The judge found that Sweenten was indigent and appointed the Salt Lake Legal Defenders Office to represent him. His next court appearance was scheduled for Oct. 6.
Sweenten is accused of shooting Anthony M. Gaines and Michael T. Ehlert twice each in the back on Sept. 22 near the corner of 1000 West and 500 North. Sweenten told police he was mad at the two for giving him bad driving directions, and then had to defend himself during the ensuing argument.
Salt Lake County District Attorney Lohra Miller said her office does not believe Sweenten's contention of self-defense due to the fact both victims were shot in the back multiple times.
Prosecutors have 60 days after Sweenten is arraigned to decide whether they will seek the death penalty.
