Every culture, every ethnic group has a story that captures what it means to be a part of that group.

Daniel Belnap, a professor of ancient scripture at Brigham Young University, thinks the people in the Book of Mormon looked to the account of Lehi's dream as their defining narrative in the same way that ancient Israelites defined themselves by the Exodus story.

Third Nephi in the Book of Mormon draws upon Lehi's dream — the Nephites' defining narrative — for how it describes the appearance of Christ to the people of Nephi.

Belnap spoke at BYU on Friday at "A Conference on Third Nephi: New Perspectives on an Incomparable Scripture." "The Exodus account is one that is used by the Jewish people to define who they were and their place in the greater cosmos," Belnap said.
