High school soccer: Miners, Ravens remain equals
After 100 minutes of soccer, the debate lives on.
The Ravens and the Miners stayed deadlocked atop Region 10 after battling to a 1-1 tie on Tuesday afternoon. Neither team anticipated walking away with a single point. But you won't find them complaining about avoiding a loss either.
For Waterford, a tie serves as a validation to critics who question the notion that the Ravens might be one of 3A's best teams. Ravens coach Tim Dolbin thinks his players can take satisfaction in standing toe-to-toe with Park City, which held its own against a slew of elite 5A teams.
"They didn't do us any favors here," Dolbin said. "They didn't say, 'Oh we're going to go easier on you, because you're a 3A team, than we did against the 5A schools in preseason."'
Nothing came easy against the Miners. Park City went on the attack in the opening minutes and did not let off the gas pedal until the whistle sounded to end the second overtime.
"We were creating lots of opportunities," Park City coach Chip Cook said. "That's the way soccer is though. Sometimes they go in in packs and sometimes you get lots of chances and don't convert."
The only breakthrough for the Miners came when Lindsi Lisonbee scored in the 47th minute to tie the game.
Hanna Terry settled the ball off a corner kick and threaded it to Lisonbee in front of the 6-yard box. With her back to the goal, Lisonbee knocked the ball backward off her right heel and it skirted past Woller and into the net.
It felt like a stroke of luck to get a goal that way, but the senior was determined to create a rally somehow.
"I'll do whatever it takes to get that ball across the line," Lisonbee said. "Whatever it takes. I don't care if I score it with my butt or my head. Whatever. I got to get it in somehow. We weren't going to lose this game."
Waterford took the game's only lead just before halftime. In the 36th minute, Kimi Miyashima headed the ball right at Cassie Palmachi. The Park City keeper tried to latch onto it, but the ball popped out to the feet of Hailey Karg. With a simple flick, Karg reversed the ball's path and put the Ravens up 1-0.
