High school football: Darts' defense bottles up Bengals
It was the second stellar performance by the Davis "D," which hasn't given up a touchdown in its first two games of the season.
"Our defensive coordinator and coaches did a phenomenal job getting our guys prepared," Davis coach Ryan Bishop said. "We knew Brighton was going to be a good test because they've got some athletes on their team and are going to run the option and spread offense."
The Darts' defense had a fumble recovery, an interception and handful of sacks on the night. The fumble recovery came in the first minute of play and led to a 30-yard touchdown pass from Fowler to Hinds. Mike Jewkes connected for the point-after to put Davis up early.
But the lead was cut to 7-6 after the Darts' special teams watched Tyler Zaelit weave in and out of would-be tacklers for a 96-yard kickoff return.
The Darts halted the next Bengals drive when James Cowser recorded a sack on third-and-four. The biggest help the defense produced was not allowing Brighton to get much going leading to punts from deep within Bengal territory and good field position for the Davis offense.
Hinds finished the night with 146 yards and three touchdowns.
"Our offensive line also did a great job and gave me time to see the openings on the runs," said the running back.
Sam Lloyd played a big part in the opening and closing scores for the Darts. Lloyd recovered the fumble on the opening Brighton drive and then scored Davis' final touchdown on a 56-yard run down the sideline.
Davis finished the night with 344 yards of offense compared to Brighton's 115, but did get slapped with 100 negative yards on 11 penalties.
"I always tell our guys you're going to win games in the special teams area, so I won't get over the long kickoff return," said Bishop. "We also had some sloppy play with the penalties that halted drives.
"But I feel like we finished on a good note at the end of the first half and the second half, so that was good."
