High school football: Vikings club Dawgs as Wilcox runs wild
While the Vikings got off to a sloppy start, once senior running back LeSean Wilcox got going it was hard for the Bulldogs (0-2) to keep up.
Wilcox finished the game with nine carries for 168 yards and scored three touchdowns along the way — all of them coming as huge blows to Provo's momentum.
"We want to find ways to get (Wilcox) the football in the open field cause he is a handful, and I am glad he had a break-out game," Pleasant Grove head coach Dale Sampson said.
Wilcox's first touchdown came with the game tied at 7-7 a minute into the second quarter when he took a toss sweep to the left and dodged one defender before showing his breakaway speed on his way to a 79-yard touchdown.
Just moments later after a Provo fumble, Wilcox took the ball off-tackle for a 14-yard touchdown run to put the Vikings up 21-7.
"I am a senior and have started for two years, so I need to step up and the coaches know I can," Wilcox said. "I will just be there when I am needed because we have plenty of play-makers."
Provo entered the second half re-energized and took the ball 86 yards on the opening drive of the second half to score. The drive was capped by a 38 yard touchdown run by Kyler Hamilton, who finished the game with 72 yards on the ground.
After a missed extra point, the score was 28-13 before Joey Owens returned the ensuing kickoff 96 yards for a touchdown to deflate the Bulldogs once again.
Pleasant Grove struck again on the first play of the fourth when Wilcox, also the team's punter, scored his third touchdown of the night on a 56-yard fake punt. Wilcox took the snap and dashed towards the right sideline and wasn't touched to put the game away.
"I think we got a lot out of our special teams. They really set us up good," said Sampson. "Those plays were ones that got us back on our feet."
Back-up quarterback Dalton Brady also led Pleasant Grove on a scoring drive near the end of the fourth quarter.
Lloyd was 7-for-12 with 135 yards and two TDs. Provo quarterback Matt Griner was 10-of-18 for 97 yards. Provo racked up 206 total yards, to 426 yards for the Vikings.
"I think of any team improving from last week to this week it was Provo," Sampson said. "I was proud of them, they were a much more improved team and they gave us a hand-full the first half."
