A South Jordan man has been indicted by a federal grand jury on gun trafficking charges.

The indictment, unsealed Wednesday, accuses Hedthel Mauricio Corleto, 32, of purchasing 16 handguns from licensed firearms dealers and lying to federal authorities while filling out gun-ownership applications.

Agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms wrote in charging documents that Corleto traveled to Guatemala within three days of purchasing the guns in 2007. One of the guns was recovered in a crime in Guatemala, ATF agents wrote.

Corleto was released from federal custody under conditions during an appearance in court on Aug. 15. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 1.
