LAYTON (AP) — A Layton man is fighting a city order to get rid of a flock of chickens he keeps on his property.

Jerry Everett lives in a residential zone, which means livestock are off-limits.

Neighbors started complaining because a rooster on Everett's property was giving a daily 4 a.m. wake-up call. City officials soon found Everett also had some hens.

Everett asked the city for a rezone, but city officials say they can't do it just so he can keep keeping chickens.

Everett says he started keeping chickens after his daughter brought them home from a school science class.
