PROVO — Historically, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints would rather move than fight, yet they are quick to defend their country, Robert C. Freeman said during four sessions at Brigham Young University's Campus Education Week Monday.

Freeman is associate professor of LDS Church history and doctrine and director of BYU's Saints at War project, which is gathering history from church members who served in conflicts or their families.

Mormons are committed to peace, with Jesus Christ as their model, he said.

"War is antithetical to the Prince of Peace," Freeman said during his presentation, "Renounce War; Proclaim Peace." "In the early days when friction came they would pick up and move ... some with just the shirts on their backs."
