'Big,' other productions to open on local stages
The musical version of the popular film, "Big: The Musical," opened on Broadway 1996 and ran for 193 performances, garnering five Tony Award nominations and 10 Drama Desk nominations.
Hale Centre Theatre opens its production Monday. "From the '80s setting, to the trampoline scene, to the piano at FAO Schwartz I want to help audiences remember how they felt when they saw 'Big' for the first time and what it is like to be a kid," said director, John Sweeney.
With an innovative set, and more than 1,000 props, "Big: The Musical" stars Danny Tarasevich and J.C. Ernst (older Josh); Jocelyn Hansen and Eden Benson (Susan); Spencer Hohl and Kooper Cambell (Billy); Eric Lash and Peter Rosen (young Josh).
The show runs Monday through Sept. 20, Hale Centre Theatre, 3333 S. Decker Lake Drive, West Valley City. Shows are nightly at 7:30 p.m., except Sundays, with Saturday matinees available. Tickets are $15-$25 (801-984-9000 or www.halecentretheatre.org).
"The Golden Age of Wireless," Utah Theatre Artists Company, Thursday through Aug. 2, Midvale Amphitheater, 455 W. 7500 South, Midvale.
This is a three-week series of old-time radio programs (future performance dates: Aug. 14-15; Aug. 21-23). Every week will include new and different episodes these are classics of American radio from the '40s and '50s, fun for the whole family. A portion of the proceeds will go to South Valley Boys and Girls Club. Seating is grass-only so bring chairs, blankets and coolers. Starring Elizabeth Abbott, Clinton Coltrin, Mike Hardy, Bijan Hosseini, Antonia Horne, Jeff Owen, Hank Pond and Kristie Wallace.
Shows are 7:30 p.m., $5-$12.
"The Hasty Heart," Friday through Sept. 13, Hale Center Theater Orem, 225 W. 400 North, Orem.
Margaret is a nurse in an Army hospital during World War II, in charge of a group of soldiers who spend their time bickering, teasing and counting the days until they can go home. With a surprisingly healthy dose of laughter, "The Hasty Heart," is a love story about life, how we live it, and with whom we celebrate it. Starring Erica Baxter, Elwon J. Bakly, Mitch Hall, Bobby Swenson, Rhett Gagon and Matt Barrington.
