Society allows form of slavery
Thank you for the editorial calling attention to slavery (July 1). It's an easy problem to ignore because it requires people outside the problem to advocate for unseen victims. Sadly, there is one form of slavery that our society actually allows. Many so-called "masochists" are subjected to 24/7 slavery. I think these are actually people with no self-respect: prostitutes, drug addicts, people who were raised in abusive households, etc. They are easy targets for sadistic predators. Let's not just assume that this is consensual. Like many kidnapping victims, they do not "call for help" because they have a total sense of powerlessness and don't think anyone cares.
