There is a tragic, societal stigma that says we can't ever go back to that time of simple, homemade goodness. We've come too far, expected too much, and showered our kids (and ourselves) with an overabundance of high-priced living.

There are many factors, but the real problem is that we've built up a culture of consumerism; and now, as we head into economic hard times, the bottom is falling out. Thrift is no longer attractive or admirable. We don't stand around as parents boasting, "Christmas only cost me $50 this year," or "We gave our daughter a plastic doll from the dollar store for her birthday. Aren't we thrifty?"
