ST. GEORGE — Former Washington County Sheriff Evan Whitehead has died at age 89.

Whitehead died Friday at a care center where he had been living. A veteran of World War II and Korea, Whitehead worked as a deputy sheriff in St. George before being elected sheriff, where he served for 16 years.

"He was a great man. He was a true warrior," said Washington County Sheriff Kirk Smith, who was en route to Whitehead's funeral on Tuesday. "He was a wonderful guy. An absolute warrior in all aspects of his character, his community and our country."

Whitehead is survived by four children, 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
