The state's largest school district is using a locally developed technology to reduce energy consumption.

The Jordan School District has installed South Salt Lake-based sEnergy Technology's Energy Cube in the refrigeration equipment of its middle schools and high schools, which the district said will reduce the energy costs of refrigeration by up to 35 percent.

"The Energy Cube will have a significant impact on our energy costs, leading to reduced pollution and the more efficient use of taxpayer money and natural resources," said Duane Devey, the district's director of energy and utilities resources.

The Energy Cube device is designed to fit around the temperature sensor of a refrigerator and mimics food. The device contains a food simulator, called an "endotherm," that is modeled after a mussel, "which is the most sensitive food," said sEnergy spokesman Patrick Thronson of Thronson and Associates. "It essentially makes the fridge run off of food temperature rather air temperature."

He said refrigerators with Energy Cubes operate much more efficiently, reducing energy costs and product wear and tear.

Among the businesses and organizations that utilize the device are Marriott Hotels, Radisson Hotels, Jim's Family Restaurant, Maverik Country Stores, Utah Food Services and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Thronson added that the North Summit School District recently became the second school district to utilize the energy-saving technology.

The device first became available for purchase in 2006, Thronson said in an e-mail.
